Exchange with R. Tuchman about Inquiring re: Possible Lamm Family Relations (1963)

Dear Norman: A gentleman by the name of Mr. Joseph Spindel, of San Francisco, has asked me to obtain some information from you. He comes from Galicia and had an uncle by the name of Note Lamm. He saw your name in Tradition and in the newspapers and wonders whether or not there is some remote or perhaps direct relationship between you and his family. He would appreciate it if you could send him your father’s name, the community he is from in Europe, as well as other pertinent information, for he feels there may be some kinship between your family and his. Now that we are settled here in San Francisco, we do hope that the distance which separates us will be one of miles and will be bridged either through correspondence, or, from time to time, at Conferences or Conventions. I do wish you will continue to keep my name on your mailing list so that I may receive your very fine bulletin, as well as your wonderful writings, as they are printed by the Congregation. Dear Mr. Lamm: It was a pleasure spending some time with you last night at the Statler Hilton Hotel. Even if we are not directly related, I am delighted to find a fellow Jew from so far away who bears the same name with such dignity and respect. I enclose a number of reprints, some of them relating to our discussion last night. I hope you will find them of interest. Please convey my fondest regards to Mrs. Lamm to whom I had the pleasure of speaking with over the telephone. I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible about the projected visit during February, 1967, p.G. Letter to Franklin Lamm about the Possibility of Being Related (1976)

Dear Mr. Lamm: Thank you very much for your warm good wishes and your congratulations. It is possible that we are related, although I doubt it. My father’s family comes from a small town near Lwow, or Lemberg, which is in Poland. The variations on our last names include Lamm, Lam, and Lamb. You write that your father’s name was Pinchas Lamm, which is the same name as my uncle, my father’s brother, Phillip-Pinchas Lamb, who now lives in Miami Beach. I am sending a copy of your letter to me, and this response, to my father, Mr. Samuel Lamm of Brooklyn, who may have some information linking our families. Whether related immediately or not, I certainly am grateful to you for your letter and hope we shall have good reason to be proud of the name!
