It is just a bit over a week that I have returned from Bellagio, and I am still basking in the after-glow of that conference. My only regret is that I was not able to stay for the full course of the Colloquium. I do want you to know, quite personally, how grateful I am for the opportunity to get to know you. It was truly one of the high points of my stay in Italy. I shall never forget the eminent sense of fairness which you displayed in your remarks during the session that I read my paper. I wish that circumstances would permit us to develop our friendship face-to-face. Should you ever plan to be in the United States and visit New York, do let me know so that we might meet again. I do come to the Middle East occasionally, but I suppose that circumstances such as they are now would not permit me to visit with you. I know that you join me in prayer that peace and fraternity once again reign so that all our peoples flourish under God. Cordially yours, Rabbi Norman Lamm

Dear Rabbi Lamm: On my return to my office after a second, considerable absence, the first letter that I am answering on my desk is your cordial and helpful one of June 16. Thank you specifically for the reference. I look forward to profiting from that and from the other data bountifully given in your article, as well as from the article itself. As I have perhaps already remarked, the discussions with you constituted certainly one of the highlights of the Bellagio week for me. Your commentary on my own paper, a model of appreciation and response, was something from which I learned surprisingly much (I hope that that word "surprisingly" will not offend you!)Once my desk is cleared, I shall be somewhat desperately occupied with other commitments for a time; but am not merely hopeful, but resolute, to get to the Faith & Belief matter presently – and at that point I may well be in touch with you once again.Sincerely,Wilfred Cantwell SmithMcCulloch Professor of Religion ChairmanWCS:js

Letter from Dr. Siegman to Participants after Interreligious Peace Colloquium (1975)

Dear Friend: At the outset I ask your pardon for not personalizing this letter. It is going to each of the participants in the Bellagio Colloquium, and I did not want to hold it up any more than is necessary. I am pleased to send you a copy of the statement that was composed by Rev. Krister Stendahl on the basis of the several workgroup reports and the general discussion. We expect to have this statement available as a printed brochure. If you would like to order quantities of this brochure, or to make it available for larger distribution through institutional channels, please let me know what number you might need and I will inform you what cost, if any, is involved. I have already heard directly from many of you, and would urge everyone to let me have your impressions of the Colloquium, your suggestions for follow up, and information about yourself – particularly about your activities that relate in some way to the concerns that were discussed in Bellagio. On the basis of these communications, we hope to circulate an informal newsletter to the Bellagio “alumni,” so that the sense of living community that was fashioned during these five days on the shores of Lake Como will be kept alive. We also hope to have available before too long the three workgroup reports, and we are discussing with foundations the possibility of publishing the entire proceedings.
