Dear Moshe: I was about to address you by your old American nick-name, when it occurred to me that the attrition of the years and the special difficulties of working with Israelis usually conspire to give you grey hair, making your particular appellation irrelevant and incorrect! This letter concerns, as you can imagine, [name redacted]. I am concerned about him not only because of my friendship for him and his family – and I am extremely fond of them – but also because I see great possibilities for him as a young man gifted both intellectually and with the passion of resolve and commitment. I admit to being somewhat puzzled that my telephone call to you about two weeks ago had apparently produced no results and had not been followed up. I attribute that to faulty communications – a feature common both to the Israeli and U.S. Postal systems. I understand [name redacted] is enamoured of Har Etzion and is thinking of going there not only next year (I’ve talked to Aaron Lichtenstein about him) but also from the time your school closes until Pesach. I am pleased at his progress, and I trust that his personal situation is being favorably resolved. At this time I would like to tell you how deeply impressed I am by the work you have done in making of Jerusalem Torah College such an effective instrument of Torah education. It fills a gap in a very real way, and is the best proof that all your labors are being well spent. I must mention with special gratitude the effect on [name redacted] of his teacher, Rabbi Bezalel Rappaport. [Name redacted] has both written to me about him and discussed him with me orally when we met in Jerusalem. The man has done marvels – even miracles – with this boy.
