Dear Rabbi, Subsequent to my letter of January 19, 1962, I received yesterday by Post Parcel three Packages containing the undermentioned books. Dr. Weiss had given me to understand that these were being sent on your recommendation. Tales of Yore – 12, The Story of Vilna Gaon – 12, The Spirit of Jewish History – 10, The Story of Chasam Sofer – 10, The Book of Passover – 10, Pursuit of Happiness – 14, Movements in Contemporary Judaism – 18, Universal Jewish History – 3.I went through the Tales of Yore and pursuit of Happiness this morning. The books are most interesting and will be very useful for our people here.There is another matter, about which I have been asked to communicate with you. Probably you have heard in New York that a convention/conference of the conservative World Council of Synagogues is to be held in April/May this year in Israel. I have this on reliable authority that the officers of the United Synagogue of India have been invited to attend and that half the expenses of the Indian Conservative delegates will be borne by the World Council.I do not know what has prompted them to hold such a conference in Israel, where the Conservative or Reform Rabbis are not recognised. Could it be to attract new adherants from Israel or is it to impress Israel in general of their World Organisation? May be by holding this proposed conference in Israel, they expect to be accepted by the Israeli Religious Authorities. This is for your information and any action that you may consider necessary.I sincerely am of opinion that many of our problems will be solved when once we have a young Rabbi amongst us. He will be our leader in all our spiritual, cultural and other activities or problems. Has there been any developement on Rabbi Nissim’s offer to send an Orthodox Rabbi to India?I am collecting details for the procedure to be adopted in the formation of a company, the registration and the licence to be obtained for import, etc. Mr Kollet of New Delhi, who was in Bomba…

Exchange with Abraham Jhirad about Indian Expenditures, Camp, and Sending Students to Israel (1962)

Dear Mr. Jhirad: Due to my frequent absences from New York in the past two months, our correspondence has suffered somewhat and I apologize for the delay of my reply to your various letters. I met last Friday with Rabbi Lamm, before he left for his summer vacation. My reply accordingly also covers the correspondence directed to him. I shall endeavor to send you as soon as possible the books you requested in your letter of January 19th, directed to Rabbi Lamm, and in your letter of May 3rd, directed to me, at least all those which are immediately available. I am happy that the misunderstanding about your assumption of the duties of Executive Director has been cleared up. The details of your duties have been outlined to you in Rabbi Lamm’s communication of May 21st to which you have already replied. It was good to read of the success of the youth activities and the classes. I am perturbed, though, by your notion that you have to spend a part of your salary on fruits and soft drinks for the children. Likewise, in your letter of May 3rd you mention that you did not feel authorized to spend the necessary funds for the trip Rabbi Lamm had suggested to the outlying districts. Whenever such special expenditures not foreseen in the budget are necessary and no funds are available, please notify me and we here will try our very best to make the funds available to you.

Exchange with Abraham Jhirad about OU Expenditure Approvals for India (1961)

Dear Mr. Jhirad, It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Joint Overseas Commission of the Orthodox Union, at its last meeting, discussed in great detail the various needs of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of India, as they are stated in the communications we received from your good self and Mr. Penkar during the last several months. It was decided to approve and support the following expenditures: (1) The continued publication of Mebasser.The continuation and the possible increase of the Hebrew classes you have arranged in cooperation with the Jewish Agency.The project which we would like to see enlarged to a greater number of participants.We would also very much like you to accept officially the position of the Director of the UOJCI, as discussed in your correspondence with Rabbi Norman Lamm.In order to facilitate the above, we shall send to the UOJCI the necessary funds which we estimate to be \$1,700 for the year 1961. Our first payment of \$500 is enclosed. It would be helpful if you could send us a brief budgetary statement containing the expected 1961 expenses for *Mebasser*, the classes, and the camp, also including your own remuneration. This statement should also contain the amount your organization expects to raise locally and the deficit to be defrayed by us.It was furthermore decided that we shall contact Mr. Joseph Grossman concerning the training of teachers in the Holy Land. Mr. Grossman has been in contact, by correspondence, with Rabbi Leo Jung concerning this matter, and our Commission has, in principle, agreed to pay the required travel expenses from India to Israel for at least three additional students.
