Maimonides on the Love of God (1995)

Immediately after the profession of divine unity in the Shema, the Torah introduces us to one of the fundamental precepts of Judaism, namely, ahavat Hashem, the Love of God: (“thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and all thy soul and all thy might” – Deut. 6:4). It is self-understood that so powerful and central a theme in religion in general, and especially in Judaism, has engaged the attention and careful scrutiny of almost every Jewish thinker. Certainly, we expect the subject to be treated by Maimonides, and our expectations are not disappointed. No serious consideration of any aspect of Jewish thought or philosophy can or may avoid considering the views of Maimonides.Before proceeding to the more analytic interpretations of our key verse, all of which concern the nature of the Love of God, it is appropriate to mention a midrash that gives an entirely different "spin” to the commandment to "love the Lord thy God.” The Sifrei takes the verb ve’ahavru. "and thou shall love.” in the causative sense:another explanation of, “Thou shall love the Lord thy God” (Deut. 6:4): Cause Him to be beloved by humans, even as your father Abraham did. as it is written, "(And Abram took Sarai his wife, and his brother's son Lot and all the substance that they had gathered) and the souls that they had gotten in Haran" (Gen. 12:5)3In an old and well-known midrash, “the souls that they had gotten in Haran" is interpreted by the Sages as referring to the proselytes whom Abraham and"All the Torah is included in the commandment to lose God. because he who ioves the King devotes all his thoughts to doing that which is good and right in His eyes"—Sejer Mit:\ot Gado! The Emerging Jewish World (1987)

Honored to deliver this lecture – in memory of a great, distinguished Jewish gentleman – George Webber, made possible by his loving, loyal family. We’re told (by the apostles of Marshall McLuhan) – books are obsolete – replaced by high-tech media. Maybe. But THE Book – never (לא ימוש)! הספר התורה הזה מפיך – not only a commandment, but also a promise. It was Mohammed who called us “People of the Book.” He didn’t mean Jewish novels, Jewish cookbooks, or even Jewish newspapers. 2. We told (apostles Marshall McLuhan)—books obsolete (high-tech media). Maybe. But THE BOOK—never! 3. Was Mohammed called us People of the Book. Meant not Jewish novels, Jewish cook-books, even Jewish newspapers but: What makes Jewish book Jewish—it in some way reflects or engages some aspect of Torah—and that CAN come, but not necessarily so, in form of novels, cookbooks—or even newspapers. "Jewish books"—must contain Jewish נשמה.4.And that brings me to my theme: "The Emerging Jewish World" or: The State of Jewish Torah—II. 1. The cohesive, organic, unified Jewish life that prevailed before the Emancipation has, for the most part, been shattered. Hence, contemporary Jewish life is marked by fragmentariness and atomization rather than wholeness. That wholeness—which included religion, nationalism, and community (כלל ישראל, עם ישראל)—has unravelled. Except for those whose religious commitment to Judaism remains strong, the greatest efforts of Jews who want to remain Jewish have been directed to: Israel and Zionism and UJA (or British version) Local Jewish Community = Federation (USA), Boards of Deputies (Eng.) Often (usually!)—both combine as elements of (sociologists) "JEWISH CIVIC RELIGION". These, plus "rituals" (as Bar Mitzvah, seder, Hanukkah gifts) but without discernible religious passion. I share with you a question posed to me by a Jewish community near New York: Is this Jewish civic religion—this JEWISHNESS without JUDAISM—an authentic form of Jewish identity, or a form of—idolatry? 2…
