היהדות בימי הביניים התלבטה בשאלת השכל ומקומו בדת. מסביב לשאלה זו התפתחו השיטות הידועות של הרציונאליסטים מכאן ומתנגדיהם למיניהם מכאן. לכאורה בעיה זו כבר הלכו בה נמושות, ולא נשאר מקום להתגדר בו. לכאורה משבר דורנו אינו משבר עיוני, ותסבוכתנו אינה מיטאפיסית. אמנם, פרובלימות קשות חדשות נוספו להוגי דעת היהדות ולשומרי חומותיה. העולם המודרני פתח לנו ארובות חדשות של מבוכה. בכל זאת נשארה הבעיה העתיקה בלי פשר, ושאלת השכל – בצורה חדשה – אינה סתם עיונית. בתשובות לשאלה זו תלוי עתידה של היהדות כולה, כוח המשיכה שלה לבני הדור הצעיר, דור שמטבעו מורד בנושנות ובועט במקובלות. דור צעיר זה, שניתק ממקורות האמונה ושאינו בן־בית במסורת האבות, דורש הסברים שכליים בהתאם למהלך רוח הזמן. הדור שואל שאלה תמה: מדוע? – והשאלה, בעצם ובשורש, היא אותה פרובלימה ישנה שפשטה צורה ולבשה צורה חדשה. כלפי שאלת־יסוד זו מכוון דבריו הרב ד"ר שמואל בלקין, נשיא ישיבה־אוניברסיטה, במאמר מיוחד, הראשון בשורה של קונטרסים דומים. כמנהיגה של היהדות האורתודוקסית באמריקה, הרואה עצמו אחראי להסברת מסורת ישראל ברמה אינטלקטואלית לדורו, הצליח כאן ד"ר בלקין ליתן להשקפתו מבע בהיר בפשטות מופתית. אלה שזכו ללמוד תורה ממנו ולשמוע מפיו את שיעוריו, יכירו במאמר זה את ה"סך־הכל" שבו רגיל היה ראש־הישיבה לסיים את הרצאותיו ההלכתיות – קיצור הממצה את התוכן ומעמידו על יסוד שיטתי ומשכנע. במקום שאתה מוצא פשטותו של ד"ר בלקין, אתה מוצא גדלותו. שתי שיטות ביהדות, לפי דברי המחבר – פילוסופיה של שכל ופילוסופיה של תכלית. אנטיתזה זו של שכל ותכלית משמשת מפתח לכל הפרשה המסובכה. תורת השכל מכוונת לספק תשובה לשאלה עיונית; תורת התכלית מוליכה לחיים מגמתיים, משמעותיים. שיטת השכל מצטמצמת בחקר העבר, בנקודת "בראשית ברא"; שיטת התכלית היא הגיון העתיד, מתפשטת על תהליך החיים, מכוונת לקיום והמשך ה"כי טוב". חקר השכל יכול להוכיח את ישות הבורא; חקר התכלית עניינו בהתמדת היחסים שבין היוצר ליצור. תורת השכל שואלת "מדוע" – שאלה עיונית מופשטת; תורת התכלית שואלת "למה" – על שום מה, לצורך מה. ל"מדוע" אין עניין להנהגת האדם או לגורלו; ל"למה" יש תוצאות מוסריות ומסקנות דתיות הדורשות מן האדם דרכי חיים מיוחדים והמעניקות לחייו משמעות רוחנית. כמקור לדבריו, הבונה אב לכל משנתו, מצביע המחבר על מחל…

G-dless Goodness (1966)

The question is often posed to us, sometimes by ourselves: can I not be good without being religious? Is it not possible to be decent without accepting all the minutiae of religion? Is not good behaviour sufficient without observance of all the rituals? That question has recently been answered ‒ in a sophisticated fashion ‒ by a number of theologians who have declared ‒ borrowing a phrase from Nietzsche, the German philosopher ‒ that “G‑d is dead.” This means that G‑d has no relations with our world, that He is unconcerned with man, and that therefore He is irrelevant and meaningless. Hence, they conclude, we must construct a morality in human terms ‒ without reference to traditional religion; we must devise a secular ethic and propound a G‑dless goodness.How shall we respond, we who | are believing and observing Jews, we who deny that — Heaven for-bid — "G-d is dead,” but who insist instead, on affirming un-dying faith in the Torah’s Elohim hayyim, the living G-d of the Bible?First, we cannot deny that there are good people who do not believe in G-d. We have all met such people in our own personal experience. However, Judaism maintains that such goodness can-not last forever. The moral instincts that prevail today among the non-religious are but the residue of a religious reser-voir which is rapidly drying up. They are living off the ethical I interest from the quickly dwind-ling religious capital of two or three generations qgo.For ethical living is the branch of a tree of life, of which the roots are religion. When you cut off the root, the branch does not wither immediately, but eventually it must die. So, ethics is a natural consequence of religion. The Ethics of Protest (1969)

Almost overnight the placid and complacent American has burst into social and political frenzy. For example, the students with whom David Riesman and his colleagues pleaded only a few years ago to aspire once again “to set the world afire,” have gone ahead and done just that: they have put the torch of disillusionment and agitation to the cheerfully tranquil and compact world of middle-class America and its optimism of mild meliorism and individualism. Social scientists have not yet provided an adequate explanation of this sudden eruption of activist students, the poor and the Blacks. But it is time to formulate some general guide-lines for a society in which unrest, agitation, and activism have become rampant. What is needed, in short, is to make a beginning in developing an ethics of protest. Judaism has always been protesting. It has been said, whimsically, that Judaism is both “catholic” and “protestant”—provided those words are not spelled with capital letters. Judaism’s interests are “catholic” in that they are universal and extend to the entire human family. They are “protestant” in that Judaism has, from its very inception, protested against greed and hate and brute force and the theory that “might makes right.” It has never consented to passivity in the face of evil. It has always refused to turn the other cheek, even to Caesar, and has preached resistance to wrong and to injustice. Sometimes the will to resist has been attenuated, but when that occurred it was the result of relentless and inhuman pressure, not the readiness of accepting evil as a legitimate fact of life. Biblical history, especially as interpreted in the Rabbinic tradition, abundantly documents the Jewish approval of protest.
