Perek Chapter 5 (1993)

בעשרה מאמרות נברא העולם. All commentators point out that there are only nine such expressions (ויאמר אלקים), whereas our Mishnah mentions ten. Their answer: בראשית נמי מאמר הוא. This is best explained by the Ramban to the very beginning of בראשית, that God first created the חומר ההיולי, the Greek hyle or unformed matter, from which He then created all else yesh mi-yesh, etc. However, there is one alternative opinion that is most illuminating: אבות דר׳ נתן, ב״ב, פרק לא – המאמר העשירי הוא "ויאמר אלקים לא טוב היות האדם לבדו". This interpretation places man’s social persona in the very structure of creation. Man's proclivity and need for companionship – family, society, community – is inscribed in the nature of reality. עשרה דברים נבראו בערב שבת בין השמשות: a) Miracles – the ten items are, by and large, miraculous. Placing them in the process of the original creation, albeit at the very end, is a rationalistic interpretation worthy of a Maimonides. b) Transitions – וי"א אף המזיקין. The late R. Joseph Lookstein's interpretation: in times of transition, all the demons have free rein. c) Burying Moses – וקבורתו של משה. The פשט is unexceptional: since no one knew his burial place (the language of this Mishnah is identical with the Scriptural verse), someone must have prepared it for him, and that was God who – again to blunt the overtly supernatural nature of miracles – created it at the end of the original Six Days. However, one can (at least homiletically) offer another explanation. Note that both the Torah and the Mishnah use the word קבורתו, when the exact word for burial-place is קבר. Hence, it is not the קבר but the קבורה that is significant: like the מזיקין (see above), in times of transition people act in a manner that is equivalent to burying Moses – i.e., destroying his teachings. d) Technology – וי"א אף צבת בצבת עשוי. משנה א׳ – בעשרה מאמרות וכו׳ – הקושיא שישנם במעשה בראשית רק תשעה מ אמרות ("ויאמר". הגמ׳ בר״ה – בראשית נמי מאמר הוא. אבל בארדר״נ – ה"ויאמר" העשירי הוא לאחר שבעת הימים הראשונים – והוא הפסוק "ואמר אלוקים לא טוב היות האדם לבדו אעשה לו עזר כנגדו". ט׳ הראשונים הם "כי טוב" כי כולם בדבר ה׳ ואין "דעת אחרת" מעורב בהם – אבל העשירי נוגע לאדם שיש לו רצון משלו, ואז אמר ה׳ לא טוב שהאדם יסבול מבדידות. אבל לענ״ד זה לא אומר שההשגחה העליונה דאגה רק למצב האמוציונאלי של האדם – על הסבל של בדידותו – אלא גם על פן רוחני. וזה – לפי חידושו של ר׳ יעקב צבי מעקלענבורג על "ויאמר אלוקים יהי אור וירא אלוקים את האור כי טוב״ – שה׳ המציא את האור (״וירא״ = הראה, המציא) בגלל שהוא, הי, הוא טוב – שעיקר תכלית ה״טוב" הוא לתת, להמציא. כשהאדם היה יחיד בעולמו לא היה למי לתת – לבטא טובתו. שלשה דברים שבין תלמידיו של אברהם לתלמידיו של בלעם – מה הפשר של ההשוואה בין שתי דמויות תנכיות שלכאורה אין להן קשר? וכן הגמ׳ בפרק החלק סנהדרין ק״ו ע״ב – המין ורבי חנינא, ע״ש. אלא שכל האזכורים על בלעם בהקשר זה כוונתם לאותו האיש – וכל אלה הם בתור code וכהתיזה של ספרו של פרופ׳ שטראוס – Persecution and the Art of Writing.

בעשרה מאמרות נברא העולם וכו׳. עי׳ רש״י וכן בשאר הראשונים, שאמנם יש רק תשעה מאמרות, דהיינו "ויאמר", בין בראשית ל"ויכלו", אבל המשנה כוללת גם "בראשית" תוך מנין עשרה המאמרות. וז״ל הגמ׳ בר״ה לב ע״א — "רבי יוחנן אמר: כנגד עשרה מאמרות שבהן נברא העולם. הי נינהו — ויאמר — (ויאמר) דבראשית תשעה הוו! — בראשית נמי מאמר הוא, דכתיב (תהלים לג) בדבר ה׳ שמים נעשו." ורש״י שם פירש — "ואע״ג דלא כתיב ביה ויאמר יהי שמים — כמאן דכתיב דמי, דבאמירה נמי איברי ולא בידים, דכתיב, בדבר ה׳ שמים נעשו."אולם למרבה הפלא, משנה זו מובאה באדר״נ נוסחא ב׳ פרק ל״ו, ואין שם שום זכר ל״בראשית" כמאמר מן העשרה, ובמקומו — ״ויאמר אלקים לא טוב היות האדם לבדו" (בראשית ב׳ י״ח).מזה משמע שהממד החברתי של האנושיות אינו רק פרט אחד בהתפתחות העולם מאז יצירת האדם, אלא שזה טבוע בעצם מהות בריאת העולם, ששלילת הבדידות וחיוב היחסים בין אדם לחברו הם חלק אינטגרלי של העולם מאז יצירתו ע״י השי״ת.
