Concerning Simhat Torah (1964)

Simhat Torah 1964 was somewhat more of a Purim nature than Simhat Torah. In addition to the usual horseplay, several parents saw fit to have their children accompany them to the bimah when they were accorded various honors. The singing of different holiday melodies during the Musaf sounded a bit like drunken wine songs. The best way to remedy this is to limit the flow of spirits downstairs in time, and perhaps to prepare the major culprits in advance. Most important, it should be emphasized from the pulpit that the nature of merriment on Simhat Torah is distinctive; in keeping with that, both rabbis should actively participate in the dancing and the singing, and perhaps in that way we raise the level of the rest of the gaiety to one that better accords with the dignity of the synagogue.Mr. Max Stern should be brought into all consultations on these matters.NL

The Center Marks a Great Occassion

It is not often that a synagogue has the zekhut (privilege) to celebrate as joyous and significant an occasion as that which will be the happy lot of The Center family this month. Mr. William Feinberg, the Chairman of the Board of The Jewish Center shortly and a former President of our institution, will shortly be celebrating his 85th birthday and will mark this milestone in his life by chanting the Haftorah on Shabbat Shekalim (February 28). Mr. Feinberg is so very much a part of Center history, that it is inconceivable to write or even discuss the historic development of The Jewish Center without reference to his immeasurable contributions over the course of the years. In so many ways, he is indeed "Mr. Jewish Center." Not only has he directed the affairs of The Center in its most critical period and endeavored with all his might and main to keep our synagogue loyal to the vision of its founders, which is the vision of Orthodox Judaism, but in his own personality he so well represents what is distinctive and unique about The Jewish Center and its membership. His simhah is not only that of his immediate family, but of the entire congregational family as well. We offer him our warmest congratulations and join his family in expressing to the Almighty our devout gratitude for having spared him and kept him alive and well and vital to reach, with us, this great moment in his life. We pray for his continued health and joy for many many years to come. May the Lord grant him the years, the equanimity, and the good health to continue his creative leadership at The Center, and to reap the harvest that he so richly deserves. Letter to R. Peli about His Address at The Jewish Center (1967)

Dear Pinchas: I am sending you enclosed a copy of an article that is to appear shortly in our Bulletin, by way of a reminder that we are all looking forward to your address on January 27th. Once again, I want to thank you for all your helpful suggestions. My best to Peninah and the children. Sincerely, Rabbi Norman Lamm. We are pleased to announce two special programs that will take place with the resumption of our Seudot on Saturdays. In an effort to give special cultural content to the Seudot, we have decided to devote one of them to the Hebrew language, and the other to Yiddish. The first of these will be our Hebrew ”seudah.” It will take place after Minhah service on January 27, 1968 at PM. The entire Seudah will be conducted in Ivrit, and the speaker for this occasion will be Prof. Pinchas Peli, visiting Professor of Hebrew Literature at the Erna Michael College of Yeshiva University, currently on leave from his duties as Editor-in-Chief of the illustrated Israeli weekly, Panim-el-Panim.It is our hope that the ”seudah” will be attended not only by those who understand Hebrew, but also by those who love the Holy Language and perhaps be encouraged thereby to further their own studies.We are planning the Yiddish ”seudah" for a later date during the season. An appropriate announcement will follow at the proper time.
