Some Thoughts on Leadership (1997)

This address is dedicated to the blessed memory of Nechama Lebovits ע״ה, who was a master of Biblical exegesis in the tradition of Torah scholarship. She was an extraordinary teacher whose life work influenced several generations of exceedingly devoted and admiring students, including rabbinical students at the Gruss Institute in Jerusalem I often ask myself: What does it take to exercise leadership in the Orthodox community in the fading years of this terrible and tormented as well as fantastic and incredible century? The question is important to us because we Orthodox Jews have a tendency to fight new battles with old weapons and to confront novel predicaments with antiquated strategies... I will mention four items or ingredients of leadership, other than the obvious need to be totally committed to Tbrah and Halakha with all one's heart and soul. The first item relates to the heart of this conference, and my thesis is: leader- ship of any community requires a number of people, not just one leader, no matter how brilliant or charismatic. No Lone Rangers need apply for the positions of leadership in any organized community. I admire the contemporary equiva- lent of the heroic cowboy who defeats the Bad Men single-handedly and goes riding off into the sunset. But I have no confidence that such leadership can endure. TYue communal leadership requires a team, a community of leaders, in which one or two or three may be preeminent, but all must pull together. I heard the following in the name of my teacher, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, "the Rav," of blessed memory: The Tbrah relates (Nu. 13) that God commanded Moses to send twelve men, each the prince of his tribe, to spy out the land of Canaan which He had promised to give to the Children of Israel. TWo of them, Joshua and Caleb, came back with a positive report, affirming the promise of God to Israel and asserting that the campaign would succeed. The Great Debate: Lessons for Contemporary Spiritual Leadership (1994)

My theme is not primarily that of "community” as it is that of "leadership.” And within that subject, I am less interested in communal or congregational leadership in the political-social sense than I am in the purely spiritual sense. You have heard, are hearing, and probably will hear a great deal about the halakhic parameters of community/kehilla, and so often our conventions are devoted to the more mundane aspects of rabbinic leadership. They are all important and deserving of attention and scrutiny. But we rarely speak of ourselves as spiritual leaders in other than rhetorical ways. And that is a pity, because we underestimate our congregants if we are blind to some of their painful dilemmas which they may rarely articulate but which undoubtedly agitate them just below the level of consciousness. Or perhaps they are consciously aware of them but they are embarrassed to expose them to public view. Or, worse, they may once have raised the issue to a Rabbi and been put off by his answer—either in content or in manner. John W. Gardner, the eminent former Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, once said, "People want to know whether the followers believe in the leader. I want to know whether the leader believes in the followers." If we are to be authentic spiritual leaders, we must learn to take the spiritual concerns of our followers seriously, even if they are unable to articulate what they mean, what bothers them, what they are striving for; we must believe in them. Let me be more specific. The single most critical and acute problem that any theistic religion must deal with—not excepting Judaism—is the existence of evil: How can a good God abide the presence of evil? It is a perennial problem, and it has engaged some of our very best minds over the centuries. But never has it done so with the same urgency and poignancy as in our times—the era of the Holocaust. The Rabbi as Spiritual Leader

The following comments refer mainly to those who are professionally involved in melekhet ha-kodesh (sacred activity). As one who has been deeply immersed in this activity for well over twenty-five years, I think I understand some of the problems a rabbi faces. I specifically address myself to the internal psychological tensions that afflict a rabbi, tensions that could become a source of creativity but also are reason for great anguish and moral torment. If there is one clearly identifiable mood that looms above all others as a threat to the effectiveness, happiness, and even sanity of a committed Rav in this last quarter or a century, it is... frustration. There is nothing quite as noxiously potent as frustration in defeating a rabbi, and in robbing him of his inspiration, his ability to function, and his idealism. I can think of no better paradigm of this dangerous defeatism than the story of Elijah in the famous passage in Kings I:19. The evil queen, Jezebel swears that she will kill the prophet. Elijah retreats into the desert to think. He sits under a tree - and he gives up: vayish'al et nafsho la-mut. Vayomer rav atah — “enough! Now take my life!” A spiritual leader who is prevented from leading spiritually sees no point to life. The emptiness is a fate worse than death. His audience has evaporated, his admonitions fall on deaf ears, his miraculous achievements fail to impress these obdurate Jews, and now they want to kill him. Well, let them! His prophetic mission is stillborn, he is a frustrated and defeated and desperate man, and he might as well resign and give up the ghost. But God will not accommodate Elijah. An angel feeds him and sends him on a forty-day and forty-night trek to Mount Horeb. Elijah sleeps in a cave, and the devar Hashem comes to Elijah and inquires: mah lekha poh Eliyahu - what are you doing here, Elijah? His pathetic plaint is poured out, and the gall and the bitterness still affect us across the centuries: vayomer kano kineiti la-Has…
