Religious Zionism in the Diaspora - Excerpts from an Address in Jerusalem (1998)

It is unfortunate that Minister Yaakov Neeman had to lecture earlier and was not able to appear on this panel. It would have been a pleasure for me to be associated with Dr. Yaakov Neeman. My surname Lamm, which means sheep, requires a shepherd, and I need a faithful shepherd – in Hebrew “faithful” is neeman – and he – Yaakov Neeman – is both a faithful shepherd (ro’eh) and a visionary (ro’eh). The topic assigned to me is “Mizrachi’s Role in the Diaspora.” I am no expert on the Diaspora as such. I am somewhat acquainted with the United States scene, and I therefore will speak on that. I must admit, however, that when I talk about America, it is to an extent as a synonym for the rest of the Diaspora.One more prefatory remark: I would not dare speak about the Israeli situation since you are at the front, in the midst of all that is happening. We Jews of the Diaspora, even though our heart is in the East (i.e., Israel), at the end of the day we stay in the Far West (i.e., overseas, in the United States), in peaceful and prosperous lands.For a number of years in the United States, there is a feeling of frustration and failure regarding Mizrachi. Partly it is the result of organizational and institutional reasons: Israel. In addition, there are also psychological and existential elements: confusion; embarrassment; ambivalence. We are in the midst of a major, disturbing identity crisis. As we go to sleep at night we ask ourselves: Who are the Mizrachi? What is Religious Zionism? Where is it leading? The answers are not easy.Permit me to make three points. First, we must know that we are not alone in our confusion. The political changes, the weak organization, the psychological and existential dilemma, are all illnesses of the developed Western World and maybe, as well, parts of the Third World, in these final years of the 20th century. The Spiritual Dimensions of Mizrachi (2004)

1) ST: “Keynote” – קינות on Hanukkah? 2) Congratulations to Kraus/Ganchrow – new spirit, vigor, energy; Y. Friedman. 3) Past week spoke to distinguished philanthropist/leader: what organizations do I think are needed critically? I: YU, OU, RZA-Mizrachi (and related – RCA, Wom) = Education, Synagogues, Israel. Our mutual obligation = work together, coordinate. Our record so far: dismal, must improve. Scandalous that leaders of Modern Orthodoxy never meet. 4) I know we are all concerned: death of leaders – Burg, Raphael, Warhaftig, Hammer in Israel; The Rav, R. Fasman, Dolgin, Green in USA. יתומים – James Reston (re: Churchill’s death) “After the Age of Giants”… But keep up optimism despite gaps. YU: Rav passed away; I decided: group of small souls = great one in aggregate. So – now: new/young. חיי אחרי מות אברהם ויברך אלקים את יצחק בנו, ותשב יצחק עם באר לחי ראי – Q: What was Isaac doing there? A: Hagar… Even after age of giants, people of lesser stature can grow into greatness if they accept extra portion of responsibility. 5) RZA/NRP – מפלגה/תנועה – It took responsibility, skill, courage for American Mizrachi to set out on independent path, yet maintain excellent relations with Mafdal. Cutting umbilical cord means independent but still mother-baby relationship. 6) Means high-level cooperation with Mafdal, but Israeli politics shouldn’t commit us. Why? Because we live here, not there; because our duty = spiritual, not political; and because we do not really understand Israeli politics from a distance (ST: genie, bridge Hawaii, politics Israel). 7) Rav on Berakhot 12a – כל שלא אמר אמת ויציב שחרית ואמת ואמונה ערבית לא יצא ידי חובתו, שנאמר להגיד בבוקר חסדך ואמונתך בלילות. We = uncertain dawn/dusk; so must cover both – אמת ואמונה. There are those – we in high danger – need אמונה: faith we will prevail, that State of Israel will prevail over enemies, that Europe will ultimately recognize, as does USA, threat of Islamic terrorism; that Israel itself will be ready for תשוב…

מזרחי בעידן של התחדשות (1997)

היום הוא יום ראשון של חנוכה, וראוי אפוא להעיר הערה קלה על טיב חג האורים כהקדמה לדבריי. תמיד השתוממתי: מדוע כל החגיגיות וריבוי הטקסים, כל ההתעסקות הזאת, מסביב לזיכרון חנוכת בית המקדש ע״י החשמונאים – שבעצם הם רק הקימו מחדש מה שהיה קיים כבר – ואנו כמעט מעלימים עין לגמרי מאותו מקדש שנבנה מלכתחילה ע״י שלמה המלך? שמונה ימים אנו מקדישים לשיקום, ואפילו לא יום אחד לעצם הבנייה! הייתכן? – והתשובה פשוטה: אמנם כך הוא טבע הדברים. כשמנסים לבנות מחדש מה שנעשה כבר מקדמת דנא, לשקם היכל שנבנה ונחרב, העבודה יותר קשה, המאמץ יותר מייגע, הניסיון הוא ללא השראה וללא אומץ, ללא דרמה וללא התעלות הנפש והתרוממות הלב, ונעדרים ההמונים המשמיעים תרועות־הידד ומחיאות כפיים. בלשון חז״ל (יומא כ״ט:) "מיגמר בעתיקתא קשה מחדתא" – הישן קשה מן החדש. אבל – דווקא בגין הקושי והעדר ההתעודדות מבחוץ, יש לעבודת השיקום והשחזור זכות יתירה וכבוד מיוחד. מה שעשו החשמונאים לשקם את המקדש ולשחזר את המזבח דרש מהם יותר כוח מוסרי, יותר שאר־רוח, יותר גבורה פנימית, ממה שנדרש משלמה המלך כשבנה את הבית לראשונה. ועל כן קבעה ההלכה שמונה ימים לחנוכת המקדש ע״י החשמונאים, וכמעט ללא זכר למעשה שלמה. – וכשרון נפלא זה של התחדשות הוא שצריך לעמוד לנו כעת, אחרי מאה שנים של בניין וניצחון, של קשיים ובעיות, של חורבן ותקומה. זהו האתגר שלנו: לבנות מחדש בהתאם לתנאי־חיים חדשים, למציאות חדשה. אם הקונגרס הראשון הפך לדבר שבאגדה בגלל החידוש המקסים שבו, אז הקונגרס הנוכחי צריך להתמסר – על־ידי עבודת ההתחדשות – לשקם את התנועה הציונית כך שתהיה בת־קיימא ובעלת השפעה יצירתית במערכת הנושאים הפרובלמטיים שהם עומס דורנו. – בכדי שהתנועה הציונית תצליח במשימתה, עליה לגשת לעבודתה ברגש של צניעות, כלומר, להכיר שאין היא הגורם היחידי בקביעת גורלה של האומה. אם היא רוצה למצוא דרך סלולה במציאות חדשה זו, עליה להתמקד במספר מצומצם של מטרות ולא לחבוק זרועות־עולם, לא לבלוע את הכל. – התנועה הציונית היא לא המדינה. היא לא כל העם היהודי. עליה לקדם את האינטרסים של המדינה והעם כמיטב יכולתה – אבל לא להסתבך בדברים שהיא לא מומחית בהם ושבסופו של דבר תפסיד הרבה יותר ממה שתרוויח, ותוסיף עוד קיסמים למדורת המחלוקת שפוקדת אותנו. היא כן מומחית בבניין הארץ ובעלייה, ועליה להמשיך ולתרום לתחומים חיונ…
