Let me speak to you about visions – good and bad. A rabbi must have a vision – for himself, his family, his community, and for all the House of Israel. But not all visions are the same. Some inspire and uplift; others mislead and harm. Today we witness two particularly dangerous visions: first, the belief that a rebbe is the messiah – an idea that begins with reverence but can devolve into spiritual confusion and disappointment; and second, the notion, found in some circles of religious Zionism, that we are living in messianic times and that the State of Israel is itself a messianic entity. Both beliefs have led good, sincere people into crises of faith when reality failed to match their hopes. The danger is not vision itself, but vision untested. We must seek vision, but also examine it – not every dream is holy. And yet, there are times when we long for vision and cannot find it, when we feel, in our own bones, that something is missing. As the priestly blessings remind us: chalom chalamti v’eini yode’a mah hu – I have dreamed a dream, but I do not know what it means. Even the yearning for vision needs divine guidance.

Sanctifying Insubordination (2005)

Recently, the Israel Defense Forces dismissed a number of officers who, for religious reasons, signed a letter declaring that they would refuse to evacuate settlers from the Gaza Strip and some areas of the West Bank. This is most distressing, especially for Orthodox Jews, and most especially for Orthodox Jews who are Zionists or are sympathetic to Zionism. What is upsetting is not the army’s disciplinary action, but the religious officers who have allowed certain nationalistic right-wing rabbis to convince them that disobedience in this case is mandated by the Halacha — and thus have contributed to a massive “desecration of the divine Name.”It should be clear that these Israeli “refuseniks” are not draft dodgers looking for a way out of their national duty. Service in the army is their chosen career, one for which they have volunteered and worked hard in love and devotion. This is their career, and we are proud of them.What we are not proud of is their decision, unlike so many of their colleagues, to follow the lead of those rabbis who declared it a sin to assist in the disengagement initiated by the Sharon government — and which has the support of the majority of the Israeli public in this democracy.Rabbis who preach refusal undermine Israel's army. Ultimately, the fault lies with those rabbis — including a distinguished former chief Ashkenazic rabbi, an eminent talmudic scholar. The problem revolves about the commandment to settle the Land of Israel — Yishuv Eretz Yisrael. Unquestionably, there is such a mitzvah. But they have absolutized this one mitzvah over and against all others. In the process of so doing they have succeeded in setting religious against secular, and religiously observant against religiously observant — thus placing their own students and other yeshiva graduates in a quandary, having to choose between their religion and their patriotism.By sanctioning and sanctifying insubordination, these rabbis have jeopardized whatever unity prevails in I…

בפרק האחרון דנתי בין השאר במנהג שהתפתח בקהילות אשכנז בימה״ב, והעליתי שלפי החות יאיר שתוקף מנהג איזו עיר הוא מכח המקום ולא האנשים, כך שכשנתפזרו דרי העיר אין עליהם חובה לקיים את המנהגים ששררו בעיר, שאולי גם המנהג שלא לקרוא את הולד על שם אביו או סבו החי ג״כ אבד תוקפו היות שקהילות אשכנז בעו״ה נחרבו כולם בימי השואה. ואם כי לא סמכתי על הצעה זו והבאתי הרבה מקורות וכו', קבלתי תגובה מחד מן חברייא, ה״ה ידידי הרב הנכבד ר׳ אברהם ארט שליט״א מטובי אברכי הכולל העליון ע״ש גרוס של ישיבתנו. הרב ארט השיג עליי שלפי דבריי בכל מקום שחלוקים בני אשכנד מבני ספרד נאמר שכיון שבאנו למקום שישנו שם שתי מנהגות בטל תוקף מנהגנו מקדמת דנא וא"כ יהיה מותר לבני אשכנד לאכול קטניות בפסח וכדומה, ודה לא שמצנו מצולם.הנה יפה הציר, אבל לא צלי תלונתו כי אם צל החו״י, ולא רק צלי ו אלא גם צל הריב״ש ממנו שאב ציקר דצתו בדה, וצל הריין פרק מקום שנהגו שהבאנו, ולכאורה הקושיא צצומה ואיננה ניתנת לפתרון קל.עב קף .המג ה ג... לפי ההלכה בראשונה צריכים אנו להביו איר מלכתחילה חלו לפי ההלכה כל מנהגי הצרות צל חבריהם וי וצאי חלציהם, כר שכל האשכנדים מחויבים לשמור את כל מנהגי אשכנד וכן הספרדים והתימנים וכוי, הלא א״א לומר שיש להם דין של סתם ציר שהרי הרבה צרים וציירות, כרכים וכפרים, שמרו מסורות צדה דו או דו ולא שייר לכאורה להגדירן כבני ציר שהיא מוגדרת כמקום מסוים. מהו איפא המקור ההלכתי לתוקף המנהגים של הצרות השונות (אשר לפי רבים מההיסטריונים מנהג אשכנד מוצאו במנהגי בני א״י, ומנהג ספרד נתגלגל ממנהג בני בבל)?ובנוגצ לנו היום, יש לציין היטב ברקצ ההלכתי של תפיסת וקביצת מנהגים במדינה דו שהיא מיוחדת במינה בדה שהיא קלטה רבבות יהודיםמנהגיםמכל הצרות וכל הקהילות מצל פני כל החבל, ובמקום לאחד את כולם במסגרת קהילתית אחת, נשארו קבוצות שלימות של אנשים, דציר שם ודציר שם, שהמשיכו את המנהגים של ארצות מוצאם וצרי פדוריהם ולא התמדגו לקהילה אחת ואף לא בציר אחת. וכשם שבא נכובדנאצר ובלבל את האומות, כר באו האומות לאמריקה והיא הפרידה ביניהם. וברור שהמציאות האמריקאית היא כר שאין לראות בצרים שלנו את האמצצי הדרוש להמשיר מסורת קהילתית..והנה ירוצים לנו צל שלש דרכים שהמסורת של מנהגים נמסרה מדור לדור. יש כאלה שפשטו בכל ישראל,־ יש כאלה שתפסו אותם או חי דשו מ בצרים מס…
