דברי תורה לפרשת אמור

והבאת את עומר ראשית קצירכם אל הכהן – מנחת העומר ומנחת סוטה הן המנחות היחידות שבאות משעורים ולא מחיטים. והנה לגבי מנחת סוטה מבואר הטעם בגמרא – היא עשתה מעשה בהמה, לפיכך תאכל מאכל בהמה. אך לגבי מנחת העומר לא בואר הטעם. מבאר ערוך השולחן בסימן תפ״ט, שמכיוון שספירת המ״ט יום כציפייה למתן תורה מתחילה עם העומר, גזרה תורה שהקרבן שמגיע בסוף הספירה (שתי הלחם, הבאים בשבועות) יהיה חיטים, והקרבן שמגיע בתחילת הספירה יהיה שעורים, וזאת על מנת לבטא, שקודם מתן תורה נחשב האדם כבהמה עדיין יחסית למהותו לאחר מתן תורה. ולכן, קרבנו שעורים, שהוא מאכל בהמה (כשם שנימקה הגמרא בעניין קרבן סוטה, כמו שהבאנו לעיל). (נ.ל. זה כשיטת הזהר)וספרתם לכם ממחרת השבת - במסכת מנחות דף ס״ו מבואר שנחלקו רב אשי ואמימר: רב אשי נהג לספור ימים ושבועות (כמנהגנו היום), ואמימר ספר רק ימים. אמימר נימק דעתו כך - לאחר שחרב הבית בטלה מצוות ספירה, ואין היא כיום אלא "זכר למקדש", ולכן די בכך שנמנה ימים ואין צורך למנות שבועות. ובהסבר רש״י "האי מניינא דהשתא לאו חובה הוא, דהא ליכא עומר, אלא זכר למקדש בעלמא הוא, הלכך ביומי סגי". אך השאלה היא, כשרב אשי חלק על אמימר וספר גם שבועות. האם חלק משום שלדעתו ספירת העומר גם לאחר שחרב הבית היא דאורייתא. או שמא הוא מסכים לכך שספירה כיום אינה אלא זכר למקדש, ובכל זאת סבר שיש לספור גם שבועות.בשאלה זו נחלקו הראשונים: הרמב״ם סובר שספירת העומר כיום דאורייתא, אך רוב הראשונים חולקים עליו. מבאר ערוך השולחן בדעת הרמב"ם, שלדעתו אע״פ שחרב הבית ואין מביאים עומר, מכל מקום שורש מצוות הספירה אינו קשור לעומר דווקא אלא זהו ביטוי לציפיה למתן תורה. וזה שייר בכל זמן. ומה שאמרה תורה להביא קרבן בתחילת הספירה, קרבן העומר, הוא דין נוסף (שטעמו בואר בהערה הקודמת), אך אין ביטולו גורם לביטול מצוות הספירה.

Why Moral People Need Torah (1970)

A fundamental of Judaism that is a perpetual source of wonderment is the relation of religion and morality. A major part of Torah concerns the social and ethical obligations of man to his fellow man. The question is, why should it be necessary to have revelation at all for ideas and regulations of behavior that man can arrive at independently? Do we not know of societies preceding that of Israel at Sinai which arrived at moral codes by themselves? Do we not know individuals who are not committed to Torah and who nevertheless lead ethical, decent lives? The question is too extensive and the problem too significant to attempt anything approaching an exhaustive answer. But on this Festival of Revelation, permit me to commend a more specific line of approach. The site of the revelation is called by two names in the Bible, Sinai and Horeb. The Rabbis, as is their wont, offer us a remarkable insight by means of a play on words; they took these two names of this mountain where the Torah was revealed, and related them to two rather negative terms. Sinai is reminiscent of sin’ah, hatred, and Horeb to hurvah, destruction. Essentially, what they mean to say is that Torah, revealed at Sinai-Horeb, is what allows man to avoid hatred and curtail destruction in the world.Simply put, the Rabbis meant that the Torah is, as Zvi Kolitz has called it, “the great deterrent” against the innate evil that rises from the breast of man. Torah restrains him, it curbs his evil propensities, it allows man to repress his concupiscence and envy by accepting the moral code of revelation.However, just as Judaism acknowledged man’s evil inclination, so it posited his native moral intuition. Man is, after all, created in the image of God, and just as God is good so does man possess extensive reservoirs of goodness and morality. Man naturally possesses noble wishes, the feel for ethical living. Men are good and virtuous on their own, even without divine instruction.Why then is Torah necessary? It is …

What G-d Found in the Desert - the Moral of Shevuoth (1952)

Rabbis describe G-d finding delight in three experiences, 3 finds, each based on a Biblical text. Each teaches a moral principle. First Metziah: Abraham. ומצאת את לבבו נאמן לפניך. Loyalty of heart; faith. Not so much intellectual conception monotheism as faith in G-d in all totality and purity. 1. sign of times, sophistication, is "emancipation from all faith". 2. state categorically that’s impossible. Every man has faith; depends what kind — a. No more than two ways. No "grays”. b. either in G-d — or idols, wheteher stone, scientism, psychology, destiny, wealth, security, communism, free enterprise. No matter how good, still idol. 3. כיון שאדם פורש מן התורה הולך ומתדבק בע"ז. 4 Cynics deride this idea as too conservative, tight orthodoxy. Under guise of sham liberalism, "so open-minded that their brains fall out", they insist on third way — no faith in anything at all. 5. Bertrand Russel: “To live a human life, man must have grounding in something, in some sense outside of human life....in some end which is impersonal and above mankind, such as G-d or Truth or Beauty". 6. There must, therefore, be a choice of which faith. Abraham recognized this etc. Second Metziah: David. מצאתי דוד עבדי. Servitude, or service. 1. G-d could have found delight in so many other great aspects of David: a. Royalty: a monarch reigning in august majesty ... consolidated Jewish kingdom. b. Military prowess: uncanny strategist ... 2nd Book Samuel (vs Absalom). No Koje incident possible under him. c. Poet: sublime thoughts which run so mellifluously thru his Divine verses... inspiration to countless generations in times of need and also bliss. 2. Yet G-d extolls servitude above all these. Two great qualities of an עבד: a. Surrender, Yielding to Master ... Sacrifice in toto. 1. איזו עבודה שבלב? — תפילה, once altar, now Bimah; once Kohen, now Shatz; once animal physically, now man spiritually —. 2. בידו אפקיד רוחי. A measure of intensity.
