Ideas for Talk at Erev Hoshana Rabbah in Jerusalem (2006)

1 – הושענא רבה הוא המעבר בין סוכות לשמיני עצרת – בין אוניברסליות ללאומיות – והמפגש ביניהם כדאי לעיון. 2 – שמעתי מהרב גנאק: האוניברסליות של סוכות – ברוא שם של "יום הדין" לכל באי עולם – וזה המשך ישיר של ראש השנה כיום הדין. הושענא רבה הוא שיאו של יום הדין. 3 – רעיון שלי: הימים הנוראים – ובעיקר יום הכיפורים על חמשת העינויים שבו – אינם רק התענות פרטית ודתית אלא גם מסר מוסרי־חברתי: איסור אכילה ושתייה – זכר לרעבים שאין להם די מזון; איסור סיכה – זכר לאלה שאין להם כל מותרות בסיסיות; איסור תשמיש המטה – זכר לבדידותם של חסרי משפחה או תמיכה; איסור נעילת הסנדל – זכר לעניים שאין ביכולתם לקנות נעליים. 4 – גם סוכות ממשיכה רעיון זה: זכר לאלה שאין להם בית, נודדים, חסרי קביעות – הומלסים. 5 – פירושי לפרק "לדוד ה' אורי וישעי", במיוחד "שבתי בבית ה'" ו"לבקר בהיכלו" – פתיחת חלונות וקבלת פני הבוקר. 6 – סוכה מ"ז ע"ב–מ"ח ע"א: מחלוקת האם אומרים זמן בשמיני עצרת. פסק ההלכה: אומרים. שמיני עצרת נחשב רגל בפני עצמו לעניין פז"ר קש"ב (פייס, זמן, רגל, קרבן, שירה, ברכה). 7 – רבינו חננאל (בתוס') מפרש שמ"ש "רגל בפני עצמו" נוגע לדיני אבלות: מי שקבר מתו שבעה ימים קודם החג – בטלו ממנו שלושים, ואם אין שבעה שלמים לפני החג – שמיני עצרת ממילא מבטל את שלושים, כיון שהוא חג עצמאי. 8 – מועד קטן כ"ד ע"ב: רבינא מדבר על מניין ימי שמחה ויום טוב. לפי פירוש מו"ז זצ"ל – שמיני עצרת נחשב כשבעה ימים, שהרי חג קרוי שבעה ימים אף בשמיני, ולא תלוי זה בדין שמחה. 9 – הרב גנאק בשם הגר"א: "והיית אך שמח" – לרבות ליל יום טוב האחרון לשמחה. והקושיה – הרי "אך" לשון מיעוט? תשובת הגר"א: אכן – "אך" בא למעט – שמבטל את דיני הסוכה, ורק שמחה נותרת בו. 10 – שוב מהרב גנאק: חגים אוניברסליים (ר"ה, יוה"כ) הם ימי דין. סוכות – ימי דין שמגיעים לשיא בהושענא רבה. עפ"י המשנה ר"ה פ"א מ"ב – "בחג נידונין על המים". הבדל בין יין (סמל שמחה, שייך לישראל) למים (צורך אוניברסלי, סמל לדין). לכן יש ניסוך המים. גם הנביא מוכיח את מצרים שלא עלו לחג הסוכות. ראוי לעיין בכתבי הרב על ההבדלים בין שלושת המינים לערבה.

Lecture on Hoshanah Rabba-YU/OU (2005)

Brief introduction on the halakhic source of Hoshana Rabba, and then a discussion of two or three (depending on time) strange images or passages relating to this day. Succah 44a – It was stated: R. Yohanan and R. Yehoshua ben Levi disagreed – one said the taking of the willow is a prophetic institution (יסוד נביאים), and one said it is a prophetic custom (מנהג נביאים). Rashi: “יסוד נביאים” – an ordinance of the last prophets, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, who instituted practices during the era of the Men of the Great Assembly. “מנהג” – they merely introduced it as a custom but not a formal enactment. The practical difference: if it is a takkanah, one recites a blessing (“ve-tzivanu”), but if a minhag, no blessing is said, because “even under the general rule of ‘lo tasur’ it is not included.” The Gemara concludes: one takes [the willow] and beats it, but does not recite a blessing – implying it is minhag nevi’im. Yet the implication remains: if it were a yesod, one would recite a berakhah. Still, most halakhic authorities rule that it is a minhag. However, Rambam in his Peirush ha-Mishnayot writes that the prophetic minhag was precisely not to recite a berakhah.Rema, Orach Chaim 664 – “The early authorities wrote that there is an omen in the moon’s shadow on the night of Hoshana Rabba for what will happen to a person and his relatives that year...” To this day, there are still some who furtively check whether... shadows appear. But let me first complete the Rema: “...and some have written that one should not be exacting in this... and it is better to be wholehearted and not investigate the future.” The origin of this is the strange customs of the Hasidei Ashkenaz, all centered on the shadow on Hoshana Rabba – in particular, if one does not see a shadow (either of the head or of the entire body), it is a bad omen.
