Kaddish in a Death Train (2000)

In a death train, in sealed cars, with barbed wires as bars, A Jew rises and speaks to his God: I'm taking candles along with me. See? I kindle them. All of us here in the car are going to say Kaddish for themselves. Yitgadal ve'yitkadash Shemei Rabba... Without any weeping all recited the Kaddish for themselves... The Face of God: Thoughts on the Holocaust (1986)

1. In my attempt to formulate a Jewish approach to the Holocaust, it should not be expected that I will venture an answer to the ancient question of צדיק ורע לו (“the righteous whom evil befalls”), the vexing problem of the suffering of the innocent and the prosperity of the wicked, one that puzzled such Biblical giants as Samuel, David, and Jeremiah. The problem of theodicy—“justifying” the ways of God to man, offering rational explanations for the ethical and philosophical dilemmas presented by the disjointedness and inappositeness of conduct and circumstance, the quality of one’s moral life and his fortune or misfortune—has a long and honorable history. But there is no one theodicy in Judaism. From Job to the Sages of the Talmud, from Maimonides to Luria to the Besht, there is only one constant, and that is the question of צדיק ורע לו, the righteous who is afflicted with evil. The number of answers varies with the number of interpreters. No one approach has official, authoritative, dogmatic sanction in Judaism, although each has something of value to contribute. And the question remains the Question of Questions for Judaism, as it does for every thinking, believing human being. How, then, shall we approach the problem? Let us begin by dividing it into two parts: first, the universal problem of suffering, the cry of צדיק ורע לו, why should the innocent suffer, intensified in the Holocaust by its unprecedented magnitude and cruelty. In kind, the Holocaust mystery is a continuation of the ancient question of evil and suffering—more urgent perhaps, but essentially the same. The second part is not universal-metaphysical but national-theological. The Holocaust is not only a human challenge to God’s justice and goodness, but a Jewish challenge to His faithfulness and promise. השואה והסתר פנים (1989)

בנסיוני לנסח איזו גישה יהודית לעניין השואה, אל נא יחשוב איש כי אני מעז להשיב על השאלה הישנה־נושנה של ייסוריו של ההולך ברחבי יושר ורב־טובתו של העושה עוול. הרי זו השאלה שהעסיקה לא מעט את ענקי התנ״ך כשמואל, דוד וירמיהו, מאיוב ועד חז״ל, מהרמב״ם ועד האר״י, והבעש״ט עוברת בחום השני ובחמדה שאלה אחת ועקבית – שאלת "צדיק ורע לו". מספרן של התשובות אינו מקביל למספרם של המשיבים – אין ביהדות גושפנקא רשמית, מוסמכת ודוגמטית לאף אחת מהתשובות, ואף על פי כן, לכל אחת מהן יש תרומה לעניין. גם אם השאלה כשלעצמה נשארה בגדר שאלת השאלות של היהדות, שאלה זו ניצבת בפני כל אדם חושב ומאמין. ובכן, כיצד ניגש לבירור העניין? נתחיל בחלוקתה של השאלה לשני סעיפים: ראשית, הבעיה האוניברסלית של סבל – צעקת הצדיק ורע לו – למה רע? מדוע יסבול האדם הנקי והישר? עניין שכמובן התעצם מאוד בימי השואה – הן בהיקפו הבלתי־נתפס והן באכזריותו. בעצם, נראה כי המסתורין שבשואה הוא המשך לשאלה עתיקת הימים בדבר הרע והייסורים. אמנם בימי השואה הדברים חריפים וחדים יותר מבעבר, אולם בעיקרם הם המשך ישיר. החלק השני של השאלה אינו אוניברסלי־מטאפיזי, כי אם לאומי־תיאולוגי. השואה היא לא רק אתגר אנושי לצדקתו של הקב״ה, אלא גם אתגר יהודי לנאמנותו והבטחתו כביכול. החידוש הנורא שבשואה אינו רק במספרם של שישה מיליון יחידים אלא בעצם הניסיון לעקור מן השורש אומה שלמה – ניסיון שכמעט הצליח, במימוש מזימתו של הרשע ימ״ש בהכחדת שליש מהעם ובטראומה שפקדה את שני השלישים הנותרים. במסגרת מאמצינו לרדת לעומקו של עניין השואה כדי להשיג הבנה כלשהי, עומדת בפנינו בעיה יסודית: עצם השייכות של ״משמעות״ לשואה – האם מותר לנו בכלל לחפש משמעות? אם אנו סבורים שניתן לעשות זאת, הרי אנו מסכנים את עצמנו באקט של הצדקת הדין – כאילו אנו מצדיקים את ייסורי המודחים ואת סבלותיהם של מיליוני תינוקות ומבוגרים. ואם המשמעות שאנו מוצאים אינה עומדת בקנה אחד עם גודלו של הסבל, הרי לא זו בלבד שטעינו אלא גם חיללנו את זכרם של קדושי השואה. אולם אם נאמץ את הדרך האלטרנטיבית ונאמר כי לשואה אין כל משמעות – הרי כאילו שללנו ממותם של הקורבנות כל עומק של ערך. כדי להבין מהי התחלתו של דיאלוג, נפתח ב״הסתר פנים״ – המונח המקראי והתלמודי המציין נתק בין הקב״ה לעמו. ההסתר הזה הוא כאילו סילוקו העצמי של בורא העולם מ״הדי…
