Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm's Speech at YU Memorial for Space Shuttle Columbia Astronauts (2003)

We meet on this very sad day to express our grief at the loss of the seven astronauts – men and women, each and every one an accomplished human being worthy of the greatest admiration. And we meet with special poignancy as Jews and friends of the State of Israel because this is the day that Israelis, beset by all kinds of problems – economic, security, political – have anticipated as a day of jubilation. All of us hoped to have an opportunity to see the sun break through the clouds – and unfortunately it turned into something quite the reverse. One thinks of the words of the prophet Amos who said, “ve’hafachti chageichem le’eivel ve’chol shirayich le’kinah ve’samtihah ke’eivel yachid” – “I will turn your festivals into days of mourning and your songs into dirges, and I will make it as a day that one mourns for an only son.” Indeed, this is a day of eivel yachid – for an only son – Colonel Ilan Ramon, zikhrono livrachah, may his memory be for a blessing. There is a special painful and poignant coincidence that this day is the first day of the month of Adar, about which our tradition tells us, “Mi shenichnas Adar marbin be’simchah.” A day that ushers in a month – and this year two months – of joy and happiness. Yet, as Amos had said, the joy and the happiness have turned into ashes, into eivel, into mourning. I cannot begin these words of tribute without mentioning the powerful and moving announcement by President Bush, a truly religious person, who spoke genuinely spiritual words. He quoted the prophet Isaiah: “Raise your eyes to the heavens and see who created all this, who calls by name all the multitude of stars in the heavens – none is missing.” President Bush added that the same Creator who names the stars also knows the names of the seven souls we mourn today. They include Michael Anderson, David Brown, William McCool, Rick Husband, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon – aleihem hashalom, may they rest in peace. הספד להרב הגאון שמעון רם זצ"ל (1997)

גמ׳ שבת דף ק״ה ע״א: אמר רב יהודה אמר רב – כל המתעצל בהספדו של חכם, ראוי לקוברו בחייו, שנאמר (יהושע כ"ד): "ויקברו אותו בגבול נחלתו בתמנת סרח אשר בהר אפרים מצפון להר געש" – מלמד שרגש עליהן הר להורגן. והנה מאמר זה קשה מכמה צדדים: א) האם אין העונש כבד מדי לעבירה זו של עצלות? ב) הייתכן שעם ישראל יתעצלו בהספדו של יהושע, אחרי כל מה שעשה בשבילם עוד מנעוריו? ג) האמנם התעצלו בהספדו כסתם עצל שגינה הכתוב כמה פעמים בספר משלי?והתשובה לשאלותינו באה מדברי מרן הראי״ה קוק זצ״ל, שכתב כי ההתעצלות כאן פירושה שאדם אינו ממלא חובתו כלפי הנפטר במלוא הכבוד הראוי – בכך שההערכה שלו מתייחסת רק לדברים הגלויים מחיי הנפטר ומתעלמת מן הנסתר שבו, מן החיים הפנימיים והעשירים שהיו נעלמים מעיני הציבור. גם זו התעצלות, כי גם ההישגים הגלויים יונקים ממקורות פנימיים נסתרים – ועל כן עצלות זו היא סילוף של האמת. העונש על כך הוא מידה כנגד מידה – שגם החיים הגלויים של אותו מספיד מתעצל טעונים גניזה...וזה קרה ליהושע: הכל הכירו בכיבוש המעשי שהביא את ישראל לארץ ירושתם, ובניצחונותיו הצבאיים. אך מתוך הפרסום הגדול של מפעליו הגלויים – התעצלו לחדור לעומק ערכו הרוחני: הנביא הגדול, השקדן הנפלא אשר לא ימוש ספר התורה מפיו, אשר מנעוריו לא מש מאוהלו של משה רבו.ולפיכך, כשאנו באים להספיד את חברנו ורבנו הדגול הרה"ג שמעון רם זצ"ל, כה סמוך לפטירתו – רק לפני שעות ספורות! – עלינו לדעת שעוד לא הספקנו להתבונן בחייו בפרספקטיבה הנדרשת, מנקודת מבט החובקת זרועות עולם. אין לאל ידינו להבין כדבעי לתוך תוכם של חייו הרוחניים הפנימיים, ואנו מבקשים את סליחתו – כי לא מתוך עצלות אנו נמנעים מן ההספד הראוי לו.מה היו תכונותיו של האיש? הוא היה תלמיד חכם חריף, מחדש בהלכה חידושים יסודיים – וחבל שרובם לא נכתבו, ואם נכתבו – לא נתפרסמו. הוא שימש כר״מ בישיבתנו קרוב לארבעים שנה. בראשית דרכו התפרסם כ״הויסקובר עילוי״, ולמד בישיבת סלונים יחד עם מורנו המנוח הרב ד״ר שמואל בלקין זצ״ל. נתברך בכוח יצירה לא רק בהלכה אלא גם באגדה ובדרוש, היה נואם בחסד עליון – בעברית ובאידיש. היה חבר טוב לעמיתיו – ער, אקטיביסט, ונעים הליכות. היה מן האחרונים שבין הרבנים הגדולים שהצטרפו ל״המזרחי״, ותמך בתנועה זו לאורך עשרות שנות חייו.במדרשים המאוחרים (עי׳ אוצר המדרשים) מובאת אגדה נפלאה על ג…
