The Orthodox Union National Rabbinic Centennial Medallion Awards Dinner (1998)

President of Yeshiva University since 1976, Dr. Norman Lamm, a world renowned leader of Orthodox Jewry, is a rabbi, philosopher, teacher and author. A student of the Torah giant, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Dr. Lamm's scope of scholarship ranges from religious philosophy to the areas of human rights and the seeking of solutions to modern problems in the light of Talmudic law. During his presidency, Dr. Lamm has helped to define the YU vision with his passionate and eloquent articulation of the Torah U'Maddah philosophy. The embodiment of the Torah U'Maddah ideal, Dr. Lamm has been quoted in landmark decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court. His books and writings on our mesorah have impacted on the secular world community. Dr. Lamm has traveled the world over, lecturing in nine countries on five continents. An unparalleled community activist and spokesperson, Dr. Lamm was one of the five members of the New York State Ethics Commission and is active in many educational, religious and humanitarian endeavors. Dr. Lamm is married to the former Mindella Mehler. They have four children and seventeen grandchildren.
