לכבוד הרב נורמן לאם, שלום וברכה, מאז שובי מחו״ל ארצה, עסקתי בכמה פעולות מרכזיות שלנו, וביניהן גם בשאלת הרבנות הראשית בחיפה. בשבוע שעבר, קיימתי ישיבה של מועצת חוגי הצעירים בחיפחק הוא הגוף העליון של הצעירים בחיפה. על סדר היום עמדה שאלת בחירת הרב הראשי לחיפה. בתום הישיבה הוטל על ועדה בת 5 חברים בתוכם מרצה בכיר בטכניון וכן אקדמאים, להביא לבחירתו של הרב נורמן לאם כרבה הראשי של חיפה.מאחר והרב לאם בא לארץ בשבועות הקרובים ביותר, אנו מעוניינים לקיים ערב מיוחד אשר ישתתפו בו הדור הצעיר והאנטלגנציה הדתית בחיפה, ואשר בה ישתתף כנואם מרכזי הרב לאם.אבקשך להודיעני במכתב חוזר, עוד לפני בנאך ארצה, על תאריך המתאים לך בו נוכל לקיים את הפגישה הנ״ל בחיפה, (רצוי באחד מערבי סוף השבוע, רביעי או חמישי). פגישה זאת חשובה להיכרות אישית של חברינו עימך.אנו נכין את הפגישה כך שתהיה מכובדת ומרשימה. כםו״כ אודה לך אם תוכל להעביר אלי באותו מכתב כמה פרטים אישיים אודותיך.אני מקוה כי אענה לבקשתי ע״מ שנוכל להוציא לפועל בחירה זו.ד״ש מזבולון המר.בכבוד רב,דניאל ורמוס.

Exchange with R. Joseph Lookstein about Soliciting Fellowships for the Torah Fellowship Foundation (1963)

My dear Norman: I received your letter of March 15th, and I agree with you that another meeting is very important. Believe me that I would love to come, not only because of the importance of the project but out of friendship and regard for Rabbi Kasher. Unfortunately, I have a Ramaz Parents’ meeting that night, and at this time of the year it is impossible for me to be away. With regard to the project itself, Rabbi Kasher knows that I consider it of great importance. However, I have lately been troubled by the multiplicity of projects of this nature. Mossad Harav Kook has such a project in operation. The World Academy, whose name I heard is about to be changed, has such a project. Rabbi Hutner has such a project. Now we will be adding yet another one. Is it not possible for us to bring together a number of these people and do one overall job, so that there would be a centralized institute to train and direct young and promising scholars? I wish I could say more, but I hesitate because I do not want to hurt any enterprise of this nature. I know that any kind of negative criticism may interfere with the success of such an undertaking. Yet I cannot help feeling the way I do. If there is a possibility, I will try to come to the meeting, if only for a short time. Warmest personal regards. Very cordially yours, Joseph H. Lookstein

Dear Rabbi Lamm: Pursuant to your conversation of today with Rabbi Kasher, I am enclosing the rough draft of a letter which with your permission we should like to send over your signature (or Rabbi Jakobovits’) to the people on the enclosed list, as well as a number of others that you kindly offered to furnish us. Would you please inform me if and how the letter might benefit by revision, and would you kindly provide me with the above-mentioned additional names, as well as about 50 pieces of your stationery (and perhaps too a sample of your signature, to be “forged”).
