My dear Rabbi Lamm, I thank you very much for your heartening and inspiring letter dated March 28, 1961. It was kind of you to remember us in the midst of your crowded programme and to write to us. The members of my congregation have specially asked me to convey to you their heartfelt thanks for the letter and kind remembrance. We look forward for your another visit to India very soon and hope you will be able to spend a little more time with us. Rabbi, your visit to Panvel has created a stir among the congregation of Panvel which I feel, will help us, achieve our goal. With the guidance and assistance of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of India we have been able to start a few activities beneficial to the Panvel congregation. To start with arrangements have been made for (i) a lady volunteer who will come here from Bombay once a month to give talk on Torah & Jewish Religion to the womanfolk of Panvel and (ii) provide help to a couple of students to continue their academic career. Your assurance of seeking funds to enable us to engage a Hazzan has thus added much to the enthusiasm amongst the members of our congregations. Incidentally we may inform you that we are shortly undertaking essential and immediate repairs to the synagogue building amounting to about a thousand of rupees. The synagogue building which as you saw personally is in immediate need of heavy repairs, cost of which is estimated at Rs.20000/-. Pinning our faith in God we will try to finish entire work. We thank you once again for your inspiring and heartening letter and for your blessings to us for the coming holidays. Dear Rabbi Lamm, Shalom. I really do not know what you would think of me for not replying your kind letter of March 31, 1971. Kindly excuse me and accept my apology for this abnormal delay, which is due to my sickness. I was down with severe attack of chronic Bronchitis, which used to worry me a lot. I am now somewhat better and I am trying to push through all my pending letters. I am still under doctor treatment due to this attack. It seems that my heart is become weak. Doctor has prescribed me "Herzolan" heart tonic and considers that I have to take Resdonal tablets, one in the morning & one in the evening. I have to go again for a check to Doctor on 26th July. I am told not to walk much or exert myself. I have curtailed my activities due to my sickness. Well God is merciful. I have full faith in "EL ELOHAI ISRAEL," Lord God of Israel. He will look after me & have His mercy on me. Amen.During Passover I enjoyed my prayers through your Prayer Book which you had sent me some time back. I understand the meaning of the prayers since there is also English side by side with Hebrew. I thank you again for your kind gift of those prayer books really. Exchange with R. Gotthold about Logistics for His Visit to India (1963)

Dear Rabbi Gotthold: Thank you for your letter of February 3rd and the copies of your letters to Mr. Max Stern and Mr. Jhirad. Yesterday evening, Mr. Max Stern and some members of our Overseas Commission met to discuss your communications. We also had the benefit of the presence of Haham Dr. Solomon Gaon. Since time is of the essence, as you so correctly point out and as we here are so deeply aware, I am informing you immediately of the decisions reached. (1) The Overseas Commission of the Orthodox Union is willing to participate if necessary in the expenditures for yourself and Rabbi E. Kushelevsky in India with the amount of $2,000. The figures quoted by you were not clear to us. Firstly, since we are to pay only for maintenance, the figures given under this item do not amount to $4,000, but only to $3,000. Secondly, we find the amount of $600 per month unreasonably high, even assuming that these amounts are a combination of salaries payable in Israel and actual maintenance of the rabbis in India. We would, of course, assume that your Ministry would continue to pay your salary and that also Rabbi Kushelevsky would continue to receive at least part of his salary. This makes the figure of $4,000 even more questionable. If I stated above “if necessary,” I did so because Haham Gaon undertook to investigate the possibilities of obtaining Indian funds from the large Jewish trusts allocated for this purpose. We would appreciate it if you would immediately discuss this possibility with Rabbi Sassoon who is presently in Israel. These trust funds are frozen in India and cannot be utilized outside of the country. The Haham will take this matter up upon his return to England at the end of this month with some of the trustees. If, therefore, the amounts you listed under maintenance are intended for use in India, the Haham is hopeful that arrangements can be made with the trusts.
