Eulogy for Morris H. Behrman (1952)

It is an irony of tragic coincidence that the period of mourning ushered in by the death of Morris Behrman is contemporaneous with the season of national Jewish mourning which began seven days ago and culminates the day after tomorrow in the Tisha B’Av fast, commemorating the destruction of both Temples. The deep sense of anguish of the individual mourners is enhanced and aggravated by the common grief of all Jews. For in a way, just as the national tragedy is felt by all our individual coreligionists, so is the affliction of one individual human being or mourner shared by all people endowed with sensitive spirits and sympathetic souls. The sound of the soul departing from the body, relates an ancient Jewish aphorism, is heard from one end of the world to the other. And indeed Jeremiah, in the very first verses of that monumental national dirge, the Book of Lamentations, exclaims: איכה ישבה בדד העיר רבתי עם היתה כאלמנה — “How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people; how is she become as a widow.” This prophetic comparison of the tragedies of national destruction and widowhood is no mere poetic metaphor or simile; it rises from the deep knowledge of a soul tormented and in anguish. For national exile and personal misfortune, while differing in degree, are the same in kind. The grievous point of similarity between the calamity of Jerusalem and the woe of the widow lies in that one word “בדד” — solitary. The great...metropolis of Jerusalem remains alone, a ghost city, bereft of its proud sons ant gay daughters. The widow and the orphan feel desolate, robbed of a parent or mate by the bitter irony of Fate. How oppressive the solitude, how terrible the loneliness.But this feeling of Badad, of solitude, is not restricted to the Prophet or the mourner• Loneliness is a stark reality which people, all people, fear all their lives• Is not the fear of Death essentially the fear of eternal loneliness? Is it not a fear that the cruel rhthym of Time will obliterate …

Eulogy for Moshe Eliezer Green (1999)

בלב קרוע ומורתח ובדאבון הנפש, וכמי שאבד לו אח יקר, באתי לכאן עם משפחת רעי האהוב, משה אליעזר גרין, ללוותו על נסיעתו האחרונה לארץ החמדה שלו, להיקבר בחלקת השדה אשר קנינו יחד כדי שלא ניפרד לנצח. הספדתי אותו אתמול, בבית הכנסת בניו יורק בו ישבנו והתפללנו יחד משך יותר מארבעים שנה. ועכשיו בקשה ממני המשפחה המתאבלת להוסיף כמה מלים לכבודו, יקרא דשכבא, כאן, קרוב לירושלים עיה״ק, עיר החמודות שלו עוד מנעוריו. ואם כי ראש-חודש היום, ואין להרבות בקינה ובכי, אבל חכמינו הורו לנו שדברי שבח בנוכחות המת מותרים.הגמרא במסכת שבת דף פ״ח ע״ב אומרת:אמר רבי יהושע בן לוי: בשעה שעלה משה למרום אמרו מלאכי השרת לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא: רבונו של עולם, מה לילוד אשה בינינו! אמר להן: לקבל תורה בא מיד כל אחד ואחד נעשה לו אוהב, ומסר לו דבר... אף מלאך המות מסר לו דבר, שנאמר (במדבר יז) ויתן את הקטרת ויכפר על העם ואומר ויעמד בין המתים ובין החיים וגוי, אי לאו דאמר ליה - מי הוה ידעיגם משה שלנו־־לא משה רבנו אלא משה תלמידי, משה רעי, משה שכני, משה שותפי וידיד נפשי־- חי שבעים ושתים שנותיו כאילו מלאכי השרת היו אוהביו וידידיו, כאילו גילו לו סודותיהם, רזי עליון.אמנם, אנשי סודו היו המוני מעלה אלה. אינני בקי בשמות המלאכים, אבל דומני שאפשר להכירם על־ידי תפקידיהם, על־ידי שליחויותיהם. למשל: המלאך הממונה על ארץ ישראל, ארץ אשר הקב״ה דורש אתה תמיד, ואשר עיניו בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה. מלאך זה כאילו גילה למשה שלנו את סוד חשיבותה וקדושתה, הצית בלבו להט של אהבת ארץ הקודש, וכך נתגלגלו הדברים ומשה יליד ברוקלין ושוכן במנהטן התאהב במדינת ישראל, התמסר לרעיון של הציונות הדתית, והפך להיות ממנהיגי המזרחי בארה״ב. עוד מילדותו שאף להיות "בונה ציון", והשתעשע בחלומו זה עד שהוציאו לפועל כשהקים במרכזה של ירושלים מלון "פלאז׳ה" לשם ולתפארת. בילה כחצי זמנו בארץ, וראה בירושלים מקומו הקבוע (ובניו יורק־-כדירתו העראית) כהכנה לעלייתו המלאה-ובעיקר כששניים מארבעה ילדיו עלו והתיישבו בארץ.ועוד מלאך, אותו מלאך הממונה על גורלה של תורה בתוך צאצאי אלה שעמדו על הר סיני ואמרו "נעשה ונשמע". אותו מלאך לחש באזנו דבר ומשה קיבלו באהבה ובמרץ. והסוד שמסר לו הוא שהתורה היא הנכס היקר של עם ישראל, למעלה מכל ערך אחר, ואשר תפקידו של היהודי הוא ליישם חוקי התורה בתוך החברה …

Three centuries. Many people – lives of plenty... yet: grumble. Very few: simple, plain lives, honorable but unspectacular; yet: happy, smiles, no complaint, no shaking fist at fate. מגיד – ייסורים לך לזוסיא שהוא בעל ייסורים. That was Pauline! Her life not adorned with accoutrements of success; yet: smiles, laugh... sing – choir, Israel. Intuitive goodness; simple, good instincts. Communal: AMIT, WIZO, Hadassah, TJC. Helpful to whole family, always ready to assist. Derived vicarious pleasure from success of others. Closeness to sisters – especially Minnie, whom she idolized. Always hopeful. Repeat: Faith (Tillie), Hope (Pauly), Charity (Min). LUCKY: Mindy, especially Gloria – over 10 years. As she returns to family (מלך מלכי המלכים siblings) – we: לכי. "Bo el Paro, not lech el Paro..." Ribono shel Olam – but not b’shalom.
