How wonderful! Here I find myself in a country in which the topic of endless discussion – at every conference, gathering, and incidental meet­ing, and even in a casual conversation between husband and wife – is the question of peace. Israeli society today resembles a cauldron which boils ceaselessly in an era in which politics and diplomacy touch the life of each and every citizen directly. The temperature of debate rises by the hour; tension and anger grow in intensity; and all – at fever pitch.Yet, in such an environment, a group of learned people has gath­ered together in the presence of nationally-recognized figures to honor a number of estimable men and women whose life’s labor is private and unheralded and whose entire careers are devoted to an unobtrusive and unpretentious endeavor far from battle-front or negotiating table: edu­cation. Can this really be true? Is it not absurd?The answer is: yes, it most certainly is true—and no, it is not in the least absurd! Au contraire, you deserve congratulations for the ability to steal two hours from the noisy and tumultuous present for the benefit of the obscure long-range future, and for recognizing that that future will be shaped by the quality of education of our sons and daughters no less than by the fateful decisions on the political and diplomatic plane. Your/ our subject is: the soul of the entire nation. It would be criminal to neglect or even to postpone the yearning demands of the Jewish soul for another year and yet another. Knowing vs. Learning: Which Takes Precedence? (2001)

Education is the lifeblood of Judaism. "The study of Torah outweighs them all.[1] There are several mitzvot which the Sages said "outweigh them all," but clearly Torah study has the greatest place of eminence in the hierarchy of Jewish values. R. Hayyim Volozhiner taught in his Nefesh HaHayyim that it is not that Torah study is on one side, while all the other mitzvot are on the other side, and Torah study is heavier than the others. Rather, Torah study is the entity from which all others radiate.[2] They are the part, of which Torah study is the whole.[3] This gives Torah study a completely different slant. It is not something apart from mitzvot. It is the origin of all mitzvot. Torah study (limmud) is exceedingly important, and so is Torah knowledge (yediah). The Sages asked, "Which is greater, talmud (study) or ma'aseh (action)?" They concluded, "Study is greater, since it leads to action.[4] One who does not know Torah cannot practice any of the mitzvot. That is why it says, "An ignoramus cannot be pious."5 An ignoramus cannot know that which he needs to practice as a Jew. Torah knowledge has a clear place in the general structure of the values of Torah.The question is: which is more important, Torah study or Torah knowledge? Is there more importance to learning as a process, or knowing as a passive achievement?If Torah knowledge is the totality and ultimate aim of Torah, then it might be possible sometime in the future to fulfill one's obligation of Torah study by purchasing a microchip that contains all 400 books of responsa from the Bar Ilan CD-ROM and implanting it in one's brain. One would have Torah knowledge. What more would one need? There are other shortcuts which technology might invent, by which one could achieve a great deal of knowledge without spending terribly much energy in acquiring that knowledge. הלימוד הוא העיקר ולא הידיעה (1994)

בנינו ובנותינו לא פחות מאשר על ידי ההחלטות הגורליות במישור המדיני והפוליטי. ברשימה הזאת אני מעלה קווים אחדים לאופיו ולמהותו של החינוך היהודי המשלב קודש וחול גם יחד. הדברים מתאימים, לדעתי, גם לגבי ה״זרם״ הדתי—מודרני של החינוך בישראל וגם לגבי ארצות הברית. העיקר ולא הידיעה דיון במהותו ובאופיו של החינוך היהודי המשלב קודש וחול מתוך אידיאל והרמוניה מאת הרב הפרופסר נחום (נורמן) לאם הלימוד הוא לכתחילה ולא בדיעבד מה טיבו של החינוך ב״זרם" זה שלנו בארה״ב? רובו ככולו של החינוך היסודי והתיכוני עוצב בדמות התוכנית שפיתחו מייסדי ישיבה אוניברסיטה. מוסד זה, שנתייסר בשנת 1886 חידש עוד בצעירותו את התוכנית הכפולה של לימודי קודש ולימודי חול בבית הספר התיכון שלו. אחר כך התפתחה מכך גם תוכנית לשילוב של לימודי קודש עם השכלה גבוהה— אוניברסיטאית. ה״פטנט" החדש היה: בערך חצי היום או יותר, משעות הבוקר ועד לאחר הצהרים, כשתשומת הלב של התלמיד עוד ערה ורעננה, מוקדש ללימוד התורה ברמה דומה לכל הישיבות המפורסמות; ואילו שעות אחר הצהרים מוקדשות ללימודי חול לרכישת תרבות כללית או ללמוד מקצוע, והכל במתכונת האוניברסיטאות בעלות השם בארה״ב. למותר להגיד שהנושא הישראלי מאוד קרוב לנו, ותוכיח העובדה ששיעור העלייה ארצה של בוגרינו עולה על זה של כל מוסד חינוכי אחר באמריקה ואולי בעולם. תכנית כפולה זו אמנם קשה לתלמיד והיא מעמיסה עליו פי שנים מן המשא של ישיבה רגילה או של אוניברסיטה כללית. העול החינוכי והאינטלקטואלי אינו קל, לא רק לגבי השעות הארוכות אלא גם באשר למתח שבץ שניהם, הסתירות וההתנגשויות והעימות בץ שני עולמות שונים. אבל אץ מנוס ממנו. זו הדרך היחידה לתלמיד לרכוש שתי תרבויות - של קודש ושל חול - כפי השיטה החינוכית שאנו דוגלים בה: "תורה ומדע". המטרה החינוכית היא לא סינתיזך ומיזוג שלם, ולא סכיזופרניה ופילוג פנימי, אלא דו-קיום הדורש מן המורה ומן התלמיד להתמודד גם עם בעיות אינטלקטואליות ומטפיסיות העומדות ברומו של עולם וגם עם אתגרים מעשיים יום־-יומ״ם. לימודי החול אינם בחזקת פשרה עיקר החידוש שלנו הוא בתוכנית הכפולה לאורך רוב שנות התלמיד בתור תלמיד. שיטת "תורה ומדע" איננה אצלנו פשרה בץ האידיאלים היהודיים הטהורים שלנו לבין המציאות החילונית שאנו חיים בתוכה. במונחים הלכתיים: היא "לכתחילה", לא "בדיעבד". וזאת, מנקודת ראות יהוד…
