אבות פרק א' (2004)

משה: מדוע לא קראו לו משה רבינו? אחד מן המפורשים: אז עוד לא היה "רבינו" מכיון שעוד לא ניתנה התורה. ואם כי זה פירוש נחמד, קשה שהלא חז״ל אמרו ששבת במרה נצטוו, וגם דינים אחרים. הכינוי היותר חשוב למשה – ״עבד ה׳״. בשם אחד האדמו״רים הגדולים – שחז״ל אמרו שמשה כתב הפסוקים האחרונים בדמע, ובלתי מן בן שהלא משה ודאי ידע שכל אדם סופו למות. אלא, התשובה שעליו היה לכתוב על עצמו "משה עבד ה׳" ובכה שחש בעצמו שאינו כדאי לשבח שכזה. מסיני: שהר סיני הקטן שבהרים – ענוותן סמל. ויהי מורא שמים עליכם: שייכות למה שבא לפני זה – even לשמה has to be לשמה. הרי מתאבק בעפר רגליהם: RH of Volozhin took it literally. אל תרבה שיחה עם האשה: Rashi – apparently had recently received two Mss of Avot de'R. Natan. Eretz Israel: because he’ll reveal to her his argument with friend, she’ll get excited and battle w friend’s wife... French: wife is נדה and thus intimacy. No mention if erotic consequences. Maimonides and almost all others do. Abarbanel: passage in context w previous idea, thus: don't tell wife you’re having company because she’ll find excuses etc. Charming, but how explain last part – ק״ו באשת חבירו. Talmud (Eruvin 53b) Beruria meets R. Yosi the Gallilean. He says באיזה דרך נלך ללוד and she calls him a Gallilean fool because didn’t he know what Sages said about talking to a woman etc., he should have said merely באיזה ללוד. Usual interp. Someone said: on contrary, she was being cynical about the out-down on women... (may reveal her status as a Roman matron.) My interpretation: definitions of categories (i.e., rich, wise, strong, honorable) in Avot IV are surprisingly ignored by radically different definitions in Kid. 49b. Answer of R. Baruch Epstein (in his ברוך שאמר) – there, common standard; here – higher standard, for elite. This supports principle by Abarbanel in his commentary to Avot, namely, that it is directed to דיינים and other spiritual elite. Thus the 3 things taught by Anshei Knesset Hagedolah all prove that the intended audience is the judges, even Sanhedrin. Hence, the אל תרבה שיחה …

הערות לאבות פרק א' (1980)

(מסרתי בשיח העם קבוצת תלמידים שהביעו התעניינות להסתפח לכאלו "דברים" בי...). "רבי יהושע בן פרכי': עשה לך רב וקנה לך חבר והוי דן את כל האדם לכף זכות" קל לנו להבין את הקשר בין ב' החלקים הראשונים של המשנה – עשה לך רב/קנה לך חבר. אבל מה ענין אלה להוי דן...לכף זכות? ונראה שהבבא האחרונה אינה באה רק להזהירנו שלא לדון את הזולת לחובה, אלא יותר מזה: במשך חיינו היו מילמייך עם הזולת, עלינו להתייחס ל"כל האדם" כולו, מבלי לחלק אותו לחלקים. לא לראות בו רק כבד או לב הזקוקים לטיפול בתור רופא, אלא כבעל חוב העומד על ידיעת בחוב.
