The Yeshiva and the World (1997)

A Yeshiva is not a place of learning and attitude-building alone. In a yeshiva a student must also prepare and adjust to his future life. And if when in yeshiva he will restrict himself to its ד׳ אמות, and not prepare himself to live in the outer society, to mingle with people even as he inwardly communes with his Maker (as taught in חובות הלבבות), he will not attain the right way in his later career, after he leaves the confines of the yeshiva – and certainly he will not be prepared to exercise influence over the world, which is the mission of every Jew: to sanctify the Name, which is possible only if one is involved with his fellow men... We must therefore strive to find the middle path between the two extremes, such that the yeshiva student will intensively pursue the goals of yeshiva life and, at the same time, seek out occasions to develop relations with the outside world...One must also ponder how best to relate to others. There is nothing more harmful to the influence we can exert on others than snobbism. Our environment does not tolerate arrogance and superciliousness, especially by young people, and one cannot influence others unless he is liked by them.The author of these words is the distinguished Rosh Yeshiva R. בשבח התורה (2000)

שתי ברכות התורה מסביב לקרה״ת בציבור יש בהן רעיונות נשגבים. נראה לי שאחד מהם הוא כדלקמן: בברכה ראשונה, אנו מברכים "אשר בחר בנו מכל העמים ונתן לנו תורתו", דהיינו שבחירת עם ישראל היא לשם התורה שהוא ית׳ נתן לנו. בקריאתנו את התורה ברבים, הננו מקיימים ומאשרים שהיא ניתנה לנו. אחרי הקריאה, אנו מברכים, "אשר נתן לנו תורת אמת וחיי עולם נטע בתוכנו." כלומר: התורה שניתנה לנו היא תורת אמת, ושנית: אחרי שקיבלנו את התורה הזאת, אנו מודעים לזה שהיא חובקת בתוכה חיי עולם (וכמ״ש הגר״ח מוולוז׳ין, שע״י התורה אנו נהנים עכשיו מחיי עולם, שהמושג של חיי עולם אינו מה ששמור לעתיד לבוא, אלא חיים נצחיים שאנו יכולים להשיג עכשיו עלי אדמות), ועוד יותר: אנו מודים שהתורה הזאת על כל חיי העולם הכרוכים בה היא לא רק מתנה חד־פעמית בלבד, אלא שהיא יותר מנתינה—"אשר נת!לנו" אלא גם "נטע בתוכנו", שיש בכוחה להאדיר חיינו מכאן ולהבא, כשם שנטיעה יש בכוחה להגדיל פרות לעתיד...

תפילה – מחלוקת רמב"ם ורמב"ן – ריה"ל. מנין התפילת – חול, שבת, יו"ט, יוה"כ. אבות תקנום: כנגד תמידין (פנימיות וחיצוניות) [כוונה והלכה]. זמני תפילה – זריחה ושקיעה קובעות mood. שחרית: הודאה ללילה שעבר: התחדשות גוף ונשמה, רחמים בעבר. מעריב: בטחון ללילה הבא, רחמים בעתיד. (כל שלא אמר אמת ויציב שחרית) [חסד (שחרית, גומל חסדים טובים, מידת הרחמים) vs אמונה [שומר עמו ישר' לעד מדת הדין]. מנחה – יצחק. אברהם = זריחה (נשיא אלקים אתה בתוכנו). יצחק = שינוי ע"י פלשתים וכו'. וכי יעקב = מעטים ור
