How wonderful! Here I find myself in a country in which the topic of endless discussion – at every conference, gathering, and incidental meet­ing, and even in a casual conversation between husband and wife – is the question of peace. Israeli society today resembles a cauldron which boils ceaselessly in an era in which politics and diplomacy touch the life of each and every citizen directly. The temperature of debate rises by the hour; tension and anger grow in intensity; and all – at fever pitch.Yet, in such an environment, a group of learned people has gath­ered together in the presence of nationally-recognized figures to honor a number of estimable men and women whose life’s labor is private and unheralded and whose entire careers are devoted to an unobtrusive and unpretentious endeavor far from battle-front or negotiating table: edu­cation. Can this really be true? Is it not absurd?The answer is: yes, it most certainly is true—and no, it is not in the least absurd! Au contraire, you deserve congratulations for the ability to steal two hours from the noisy and tumultuous present for the benefit of the obscure long-range future, and for recognizing that that future will be shaped by the quality of education of our sons and daughters no less than by the fateful decisions on the political and diplomatic plane. Your/ our subject is: the soul of the entire nation. It would be criminal to neglect or even to postpone the yearning demands of the Jewish soul for another year and yet another. So my warmest congratulations to you!There is just one thing I do not understand: Why have you chosen to honor me, a man of the Diaspora, amongst this impressive list of “The Honorees of Religious Education?” I know there are those greaterand better than I who deserve to receive the title of “Honorary Fellow.” If I have nevertheless accepted this decoration, it is because of some- thing that happened a number of years ago. The Challenges of Jewish Education in the 80s (1979)

Any discussion of Jewish education in the coming decade stands to benefit much from Dean Henchey's cogent analysis of the general educational scene. Because Jews do not live in a vacuum, or even – in the open, democratic, and pluralistic society of North America – in hermetically sealed enclaves, what he has to say about the contours of society as they are beginning to emerge for the 1980s must clearly enrich any analyses and prescriptions that we may offer for Jewish education in particular. However, because of the peculiar nature of our community and our concerns, our focus must simultaneously be somewhat narrower and somewhat broader. It must be narrower, because as a minority (irrespective of the degree of our creativity) we are bound to operate within the social parameters, communal structures, and cultural paradigms which our whole society sets for us. Perhaps it would be more courageous to speak of rejecting these structures and paradigms and reaching out boldly for something radically different. But realistically, that will not happen, certainly not when one considers how intimately and intricately North American Jewry is tied in with the mainstream of Western civilization and, even more, with the cutting edge of its most progressive elements. The best we can do — and this must never be denigrated — is to seek out creatively those nooks and crannies within these structures which we consider more amenable to Jewish development, more accessible to Jewish aspiration, and more compatible with Jewish values and principles. It is here that collective innovation is possible for us. Our focus must be broader because our educational concerns embrace not only the transmission of knowledge — of the cognitive and abstract elements of culture per se — but the whole gamut of Torah, which is as broad as life itself. מורי ורבות׳, אף אני אענה כנגד המברכים, ובשם חברי מארצות הברית אני מכיר טובה לכולכם, שקיבלתם את פנינו והזמנתם אותנו להשתתף אתכם בדו־שיח זה. אבקש לפתוח בכמה מלים לכבוד האכסניה. כבוד הוא לנו, אנשי חו״ל, שאנחנו מתארחים אצלכם בקיבוץ נהדר זה, בנוף היפה והמרענן, יחד עם אנשי "תורה ועבודה", אנשים שהגשימו כמו־חייהם את החזיונות הנשגבים שכולנו חלמנו עליהם; אנשים שאנחנו, בני הגולה, מכירים אותם הן מקרוב והן מרחוק.אנחנו יודעים היטב את המבוכה בה נמצאת יהדות העולם, ואת הסכנות הצפויות לכולנו, הן במצב השורר בארץ, והן אצלנו בגולה. לא חסרות אצלנו בעיות. דווקא בימים אחרונים אלה, כשיצאנו מן הגולה, נתחדשו לנו בעיות פנימיות של שחיתות נוראה, וכדי בזיון וקצף. ליום׳יומיים, ננסה להיחלץ מהעומס של דאגות יום־יום ושל הדכאון הפסיכולוגי והמצוקה הרוחנית, שהם עניינא דיומא ושהם מתחדשים חדשים לבקרים. נישא עינינו אל כמה נושאים העומדים ברומו של עולם. הפרובלמות שנדון בהן בימים אלה, הן בעיקר עניני ם שבמחשבה, שברעיון, — כמו: משטר ההלכה בחברה רבת־הגוונים; אמונת חכמים, שהיא סוגיה קשה בשבילנו; על היחס בין האורתודוכסים ולא־אורתודוכסים בארץ, ולא רק בחו״ל, ועל אפשרות חידוש ויצירה בשטח של טקסים דתיים. אם כי הנושאים נראים במבט ראשון כתיאורטיים, אין זאת אומרת שהם סוגיות בחינת הלכתא למשיחתא, דברים שאין להם קשר לעלמא הדין.אדרבא, כל נושא ונושא שבחרנו בו, בהדרכת ידידנו בנימין, מגשר ומקשר את עולם המושגים הטהורים ועולם המעשה הגועש והרועש; המישור האינטלקטואלי והמישור הפרקטי והמעשי. הנושאים האלה עומדים ברומו של עולמנו, ועל־פי הטבע, הדברים יורדים מלמעלה למטח. הימים שאנחנו נקדיש לדיונים אלה, לוואי שירדו וייספגו לתוך חיינו היום־יומיים, גם כאשר כל אחד מאתנו ילך ויחזור לביתו ולעבודתו.כדרכם של תלמידי־חכמים, לא יהיה דו־שיח זה מתובל בנימוסים יותר מן המדה — עד כדי טשטוש הגבולין בין דעות נוגדות. אדרבא, בכדי שההתמודדות תביא לידי הבהרה והבנה, יש ונחריף את הגרסאות שלנו, ויש שמתוך שיחה ינסה מישהו להפוך את הקערה על פיה בכדי שאחר כך יוכל כל אחד לדוש בה כרצונו.8מכירים אנחנו, האחים מארצות הברית, את רב ערכם של בני השיחה שלנו מן הקיבוץ הדתי. כבר יצאו לכם מוניטין מאז זכינו להכיר אתכם, או פנים־אל־פנים או מתוך הכתב. אנחנו יודעים שבדרך כלל אתם זכית…
