Symposium on the State of Jewish Belief (1966)

In revelation, the Divine meets the human: It does not remain in inaccessible transcendence. While meeting the finite human, It yet remains in divine infinity: the finite is not idolatrously deitied. And It enters into the human situation: It does not force the human into a mystic surrender of its finitude. The Divine commands, and commands humans in their humanity. . . But it cannot do so except by singling out particular humans in their particularity. A philosopher may rise above his particular situation to the perception of a timeless truth. Every prophet must remain tn his situ- ation, in which the divine word singles him out. And the same is true of the whole people Israel. A Jew may wish to abandon his belief in the chosen people (1 would prefer: his covenant with God), and seek to transform, in the style of philosophy, his Judaism into a set of timeless universal truths to which he has risen. To do so. however, is to fragment the one reality of lhe covenant into two realities only accidentally connect- ed- a Judaism reduced to purely universal principles, and a Jewish people reduced to a merely accidental particularilv. To some this fragmentation is a modern necessity. To the believer in a singling-out revelation it is a religious impossibility. To the believer, a Jewish self-understanding of Jewishness as a merely accidental manifestation of humanity-in-gcncral, only accidentally having a special obligation to the ”universal principles of Judaism, is not a rise to a higher level of humanity. It is a betrayal of the Jew ish position. Thai the chosen-people concept has nothing in common with racism is shown by the traditional doctrine concerning converts, who become sons of Abraham. That it is diametrically opposed to racism- as well as to the religious tribalism which may be viewed as its ancient countcrpart-follows from the bcing-singled-out which is the chosenness. נושא א' – אמונה וספק (על יסוד מאמרי ב"טרדישון" 9:1–2): האמונה בהלכה – א) הרמב"ם, הלכות יסודי התורה: יסוד היסודות ועמוד החכמות לידע שיש שם מצוי ראשון והוא ממציא כל הנמצא… ואם יעלה על הדעת שאין כל הנמצאים מלבדו מצויים, הוא לבדו יהיה מצוי, ולא יבטל הוא לבטולם, שכל הנמצאים צריכים לו והוא אינו צריך להם ולא לאחד מהם, לפיכך אין אמתתו כאמתת אחד מהם. וידיעת דבר זה מצוות עשה, שנאמר: אנכי ה' אלוקיך. וכל המעלה על דעתו שיש שם אלוה אחר חוץ מזה עובר בלא תעשה, שנאמר: לא יהיה לך אלהים אחרים על פני. וכופר בעיקר – שזהו העיקר הגדול שהכל תלוי בו. אם כן, "אנכי" היא מצוות האמונה במציאות האלוקים. ההיפך מזה הוא לא אתאיזם בלבד אלא גם אמונה באלוהות שאינה מחויבת המציאות – אל אחר, חוץ מזה. על פי הרמב"ם, משמעות "אנכי" היא: מצוי ראשון – מחויב המציאות – אלוקיך – ועליך להכיר באלקותי. ב) שיטת הגאונים (בה"ג ורס"ג): לדעתם אין למנות את האמונה כמצווה בפני עצמה, כי זו היא הנחת היסוד של כל הדת ואינה ראויה להיספר בנפרד. הרמב"ם משיב: המצווה איננה רק קבלת הנחה אלא ידיעה עמוקה ומבוררת. לכן היא מצווה דינמית ולא סטטית. הרמב"ם גם מקשה על הגאונים מדברי הגמרא בסוף מכות, שם מונים את "אנכי" ו"לא יהיה" בכלל התרי"ג מצוות. ג) ניתוח גורמי הכפירה והספקנות – ע"פ הקדמת רס"ג לאמונות ודעות. ד) הספק כבעיה אקזיסטנציאלית – ע"פ פאול טיליך: החרדה היא מצב שבו האדם חש באפשרות אי-היותו. יש שלושה סוגי חרדה: אונטית (פחד מהמוות), רוחנית (חוסר משמעות), ומוסרית (תחושת אשמה). החרדה הרוחנית היא החשובה לענייננו – אבדן משמעות כוללת – ומקורה בהיעדר תשובה לשאלת משמעות הקיום. תגובת האדם היא ספק, שמגיע עד לייאוש אקזיסטנציאלי – סכנה רוחנית הקרובה למוות. מכאן נובעת חשיבות הפתרון שהציעו חכמי ישראל: "אין שמחה כהתרת הספקות". ה) שתי גישות לאמונה וספק – 1. אמונה תמימה, פשוטה – אמונת ההמון, רבי נחמן מברסלב, החסידים והגר"א. 2. שכלתנות – רוב הפילוסופים בימי הביניים. ר' בחיי בחובות הלבבות: חובה לחקור כפי ההבנה – התורה צוותה "וידעת היום". יש להבחין בין מי שאינו מסוגל לחקור למי שמתעלם מלעשות כן. פרופ' וולפסון: רק דרך העיון מגיעים לאמונה שלמה. ו) שלושה סוגי אמונה – ע"פ מרטין בובר: 1. אמונה הכרתית – קוגניטיבית – קבלת טענה כאמת. 2. אמונה רגשית – בטחון – רגש ש…
