Talk to First Year Students - RIETS (2001)

Franz Rosenzweig/The Inaugural Address of the Frankfurt Lehrhaus; 1920: “Then came the Modern Age. At one blow, it vastly enlarged our intellectual horizons and our very lives. The teaching of Judaism struggled to keep pace with this rapid expansion. What was new was not so much the collapse of the ghetto wall; even previously the Jew moved beyond the bounds of the ghetto. What was new was not that the Jew’s feet could now take him farther than ever before. The new feature was that the wanderer no longer returned at dusk. The gates of the ghetto no longer closed behind him, allowing him to spend the night in solitary learning. And gradually, the wanderer found his spiritual and intellectual home outside the Jewish world. We are the children of those wanderers...” 2. Letter of Approbation for Sermons of R. Naphtali Carlebach

It has been a pleasure for me to read through the sermons of my distinguished colleague. Rabbi Dr. Naphtali H. Carlebach. It is rare that one chances upon a manuscript which so faithfully reflects the spirit and personality of its author. The mellowness of expression one will find in these sermons, the generosity of soul evident in every sentence, the brooding regret which is the harshest reproach the author permits himself, the profound genuineness of conviction that breathes in the very words -- these are not merely matters of style, a facon de parler, but they they are part of the author himself, the very stuff of his char- acter. A lovelier soul and a saintlier personality has rarely if ever graced the rabbinic community of this country. There are three qualities that are equal in value, the Sages taught (Dereich Eretz Rabbah, Chap. VI); wisdom, piety, and meekness. Equal portions of all three constitute the major in- gradients of this volume. It is an eminently successful formula for conveying to the reader a sense of the presence of that wise, God-fearing, and truly humble man who is the author.Norman LammDecember 18, 1967
