Letter from R. Schreier about R. Lamm's Appointment to YU Presidency (1976)
Dear Norman, in the midst of the sadness of this day, the electrifying news of your election to the presidency of Yeshiva University reached me. In the midst of sadness there is consolation, and in the midst of the gloom that has hung over the Yeshiva in the last few months, there comes the good news that our Yeshiva has once again found a man of ability who will in a real sense have a positive influence on the future of American Jewry as well as world Jewry. I send you my heartfelt good wishes on this occasion which marks a deserved recognition to a distinguished career as rabbi, scholar, orator, writer and leader. There is a special sense of good feeling, because knowing you as long and as well as I do, I have always advocated your rise to a position of great leadership within the Orthodox community. The loyalty that I have manifested to the Yeshiva in the past will continue, and I am sure the same will come from the vast number certainly of our rabbinic alumni and the many students and people whom you have inspired. In the spirit of this day, I hope that your work will be blessed so that it will contribute significantly to the redemption of our people. With warm personal regards, as ever, Max
