Letter to Hatzaad Harishon about Leaving Their Board Due to Halachic Concerns with Their Conversion Standards (1970)
Dear Sir: It is with the deepest regret that I ask that my name be taken off your stationery and removed from the Board of Directors of Hatzaad Harishon. Six years ago I was only too glad to associate with the group and give it whatever encouragement I could. I was confident that gradually the members of Hatzaad Harishon would appreciate the fact that the halakhic standards are the only legitimate ones for entrance into the Jewish community.I believe that black men and women, in accordance with their full dignity, would not want to be patronized by expecting any lesser standards for themselves than for members of the white community who wished to become Jews.I am deeply distressed that this has not come to pass. Therefore, until such time as the organization firmly and unequivocally adopts a program fully in accordance with Halakhah and its standards, I must dissociate myself from Hatzaad Harishon.Cordially yours,**Rabbi Norman Lamm**The Jewish Center131 West 86th StreetNew York, N.Y. 10024Schuurler 4-3511
