Exchange with Adolf Schauder about His Biographical Material (1964)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, Since you left Port Elizabeth I have heard nothing from you, but I followed the various Jewish and non-Jewish papers and am very pleased indeed with the various statements and speeches made by you. I think that your trip to South Africa was a success from every point of view, and I also hope that you have enjoyed your trip very much. I for one was very happy to have met you, especially as you come also from the province of Galicia. As promised, I am sending you under separate cover various printed matter which might be of interest to you. I hope you will find time to read same. With kindest regards and best wishes,I remain,Yours sincerely,A. SCHAUDER---PILLARS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTNo. 8: CR. ADOLF SCHAUDERThe PEPL leaps with particular pleasure to its portrait of Adolf Schauder, because the report has been belied that, after 40 years’ uninterrupted service as a councillor of the City of Port Elizabeth, he had decided to retire. He has given the Editor the following account of how he comes still to be a city councillor:> “I questioned whether to fight the election or stand again. At the ratepayers’ meeting they stated that they wanted ‘new blood’. In answer to this I told them that if they wanted real new young blood, they must vote for me because, during the last 40 years as a councillor and dealing with all the slum landlords and other vested interests and fighting for decent homes for all classes of the people, I had lost all my old blood in the fight and this was replaced by new blood. Anyhow, in view of the critical position South Africa is undergoing at present, I felt it was a crime to retire when I could still be of service and therefore decided to stand again.”Not surprisingly, he was re-elected: ratepayers generally know a good thing when they see one.Great Housing AuthorityDynamic and drily humorous, Cr. Schauder makes an immediate impression. When he unexpectedly entered the Editor’s Johannesburg office some time ago, it was more than a f…

Exchange with Adolf Schauder about Port Elizabeth Jewry and Antisemitism in the South African Parliament (1964)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, I have just received your letter dated March 31st and thought I would reply immediately. As regards the biographical materials which I sent to you, there is no hurry to return them. You can take as long as you like. All I want to tell you is that what I sent you is simply a drop in the ocean. I have lived in Port Elizabeth for 64 years and the real story of my Jewish activities can hardly be described. A handful of Jews struggled through trial and tribulations to build up a community which you have seen with your own eyes. I struggled with the Jewish Community for over a quarter of a century, until I became a City Councillor and handed over this work to the younger generation. I am still actively connected with the Jewish Board of Deputies, being one of its Vice-Presidents and also founder of ORT-OZE and its President in the Eastern Province. I am also a member of the World Executives. As already advised you, my son is busy writing a book on my life. It is difficult to say when he will be able to finish it as he is occupied with business from day to day.Re: Pictures I sent you. They will not be of great value to you. The main thing is the message. I built in Port Elizabeth over 30,000 houses for all races. More than half the population live in Municipal houses. There were thousands of people who would never have owned a brick or a roof over their heads. Hundreds of them have already paid for the houses. Those properties today are valued at double and treble what was originally paid for same. All this I achieved without costing the State or Municipality one single penny. All the costs of the houses etc. have been repaid and thousands of families became independent. In other words, instead of a few people getting rich and becoming millionaires in speculating and gambling with people’s homes, we have helped thousands of people to become self-respecting and independent. High rents and charges generally are the cause of broken homes and divorces. When one…

Letter to Adolf Schauder about His Achievements Housing in South Africa (1964)

Dear Mr. Schauder: I just received your packet of photographs and additional information as well as some printed material about your historic achievements on our behalf of housing in South Africa. I am transmitting the material to Dr. Moshe Epstein of the World Over magazine. Because we are now entering our summer period, when all communal activity ceases, he probably will be holding the material you sent me until September or October, at which time, no doubt, the article will be published. As soon as use has been made of this material I will send it back to you. Naturally, when the article appears in print, Dr. Epstein will send you a quantity of reprints.Thank you once again for all your kind assistance. I hope the conference in Rhodesia went well. Please accept my blessings, my best wishes, and my felicitations. Mrs. Lamm sends her kindest regards.Sincerely,RABBI NORMAN LAMMNL\:ffcc: Dr. Epstein w/enclP.S. At the same time, please accept my heartiest congratulations on receiving the Dove Revel Award. May you have many more such awards for many years to come.
