Letter from R. Rosenberg about Federal Kashrut Regulation Negatively Affecting OU Symbol (1962)

Dear Colleague, Please be informed that a federal regulation has been issued requiring that the supervising rabbi’s name appear on the plumbing on poultry processed in government-inspected plants. We have three such plants under our supervision, and carrying out this ruling would mean that instead of the insignia appearing on the seals we would have to print the name of the local rabbi on each plumbing. Such a procedure would be impossible for us, and we advised the Government of our attitude. We have now placed the matter in the hands of the UOJCA attorney, Mr. Wolfe Charney, who suggested that we obtain affidavits from our rabbis to the following effect: (1) that the rabbi recognizes the insignia as an unquestioned symbol of kashruth certification; (2) that the housewife looking for certification prefers to look for the insignia rather than that of an individual rabbi’s name, whom she may never have heard of.It will be helpful if similar affidavits are made out by two housewives. Such affidavits should be addressed "To Whom It May Concern," and mailed to our office as soon as possible. We have been granted an extension of sixty (60) days—which expires before very long—during which time the Government will not take action against packers using the imprinted seals. It is, therefore, imperative that we have these affidavits in our hands as soon as possible so that our lawyer can go to work on the problem.Thanking you kindly for your cooperation, I remain,Sincerely yours,RABBI ALEXANDER S.
