Letter to R. Melech Press about Educational Project on Shabbat and Eruvin (1970)
Dear Melech, I once again looked over the material you sent me on Shabbat and Eruvin. Quite frankly, I am impressed with it and especially with its clarity. Unquestionably, there is something of value here. However, I feel that the audience for which it was written is rather restricted. Study groups that cannot read Hebrew and are sufficiently interested in Yahadut to pursue such matters do not abound all over the country. In other words, this is the kind of material that would appeal to JSS students, or Stern girls who have no yeshiva high school background. While this certainly is commendable, I wonder whether such a small audience is worth a major publishing effort. As I explained to you over the phone, this is about the worst time possible to solicit me for a new venture. I am being overwhelmed by all kinds of requests and, as you are well aware, the economic conditions are such that people have simply stopped giving for anything.I hope that God willing, and Nixon listening, conditions will yet change, in which case I certainly will want to participate in a venture of this sort. So don’t give up, just forgive me for delaying my response much against my will and judgment.Cordially yours,RABBI NORMAN LAMMNL/ek
