Letter to Judge Murtagh Requesting Dismissal of Parking Ticket Summons (1963)
Dear Judge Murtagh: In accordance with the recommendation made to me by a clerk in the court, I am sending enclosed a summons I recently received together with an explanation why I feel I should not be required to pay the fine. The car was double parked immediately in front of my synagogue. A "Clergy" sign was prominently displayed together with a clearly visible note, which I had hurriedly written when I parked, explaining to any patrolman that I was in the synagogue building on important business. I signed my name to the note. My presence in the synagogue was not as required by normal business, but more in the nature of an emergency. Even then, I left my study a number of times to make sure that no other motorist was inconvenienced, and I even drove around several blocks looking for a parking place, but without success. Under normal circumstances I would certainly not protest the ticket. But in this particular case, I respectfully submit that there was good reason for me to do what I did, and I therefore request of your Honor to dismiss the summons. With many thanks for your kind and thoughtful consideration. Sincerely your, Rabbi Norman Lamm
