Exchange with D.S. Moses about Halacha of Belonging to Masonic Lodge (1965)
My dear Rabbi Lamm, As our community in Bombay is confronted with a complicated religious problem, I have taken this liberty of approaching your Honour, for your learned opinion and decision on this important issue. 1. Is a Jew permitted to be a member of the Masonic Lodge? 2. Is a Jewish Mason permitted to conduct the service in the Synagogue on (a) Yom Kippur (b) or on any other day including Sabbath & Festival Days? 3. Is a Mason (Jewish) permitted to carry the 'KOL NIDRE' SEPHER TORAH on KIPPUR NIGHT and pronounce the prescribed passages thereof? 4. Is a Jewish Mason permitted (a) to read the 'MAFTIR' on the SEPHER TORAH on YOM KIPPUR (b) or any other portion of the SEPHER TORAH on YOM KIPPUR or on Sabbath or Festival Days? Awaiting your early reply with much interest and thanking you in anticipation. Yours sincerely, D.S. Moses
