Correspondences with Liebman, Prof. Charles

Correspondence

Exchange with Dr. Liebman about Summer Institute on Judaism and Contemporary Thought (1972)

Dear Norman, Since I spoke with you by telephone, the Institute's financial situation has clarified. We will hold sessions this summer and they promise to be interesting. Have your own plans clarified? Is your attendance out of the question? I will probably be in New York for a week or two in the end of May or beginning of June. My mother is quite sick and would like me to come. I know you must be besieged with requests and I am not asking for favors but I do want you to know that I would be available for public lectures at that time. Cordially, Charles S. Liebman

Letter to Dr. Liebman about Scheduling a Lecture for Him (1972)

Dear Charles: I have searched about, here and there, and as of now cannot find a lecture for you during the approximate period of May 23-June 5. However, I certainly will keep it in mind if anything comes up. My own congregation cannot schedule anything during this period for a variety of reasons. I am surprised you think you need a new suit. With a halo about your sacred head, and all the horns of profound knowledge emanating from your Michaelangelo-like, who is going to notice a mere suit? See you when you get here. Cordially, Rabbi Norman Lamm

Correspondence

Exchange with Dr. Liebman about R. Lamm's Appointment to YU Presidency (1976)

Dear Norman, I was at the Jewish Center this Shabbos to wish you a personal מזל טוב, but I discovered you were taking your last vacation. I will be at JTS for the next two years. We have an apartment on Broadway & 90th – but it appears that Carole’s ambition to be a congregational spouse is not to be fulfilled. I really wish you all the best. I always felt close to Y.U., even now that you are at the helm, and if there is anything I can do for you – I’ll try my best.
