Exchange with Tina Levitan about Granting Permission to Use Quote from R. Lamm for "The Scientist and Religion" (1971)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: I know you will be pleased to hear that an enlarged edition of my publication The Scientist and Religion is now scheduled for early publication. The Scientist and Religion has won universal acclaim among religious leaders, educators and scientists alike. Among the comments received were those of Dr. Derek de Solla Price, Avalon professor of the history of science at Yale University who wrote: “I enjoyed reading this small classic.” Written within the framework of traditional Judaism, The Scientist and Religion demonstrates the viewpoint of outstanding Jewish scientists that many current findings of natural and physical science do not contradict the facts of the Bible and the wisdom of Judaism and that the faith which binds together Jews has not been harmed by modern scientific teachings but on the contrary has been clarified into its profoundest tenets. At this time as you were kind enough to express your opinion of this study, I would very much like to quote you on the cover. However, in order for me to quote the necessary statement I obtain your approval with the following statement or any alteration to this effect: “You may have my permission to use the following lines as quoted on the cover of your publication The Scientist and Religion.” Should the following statement, with minor editorial revisions, meet with your approval: The Scientist and Religion is an excellently written, up-to-date work of distinction. You have rendered an important service to our faith and people by holding up, through the words of eminent Jewish scientists, the enduring models of successful accommodation of Judaism to modern science. You inspire young people to emulate these great men. Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm The Jewish Center, New York City
