Letter to Dr. Muni Baumol about Erecting Statue for Governor Rockefeller (1966)
Dear Mr. Baumol: Thank you very much for your recent letter soliciting my assistance in erecting a statue to Governor Rockefeller. I read the letter with the greatest of interest. I quite agree with its contents, but do not think that you go nearly far enough. I would like to recommend that the statue have in front of it a place where the devout can genuflect, and also a golden calf about which those who share the same financial religion with the Governor may dance and carry on. Additionally, there should be a receptacle for "kvittelelch" by non-observant Jews, who share the Governor’s philosophy of human beings and certain kinds of animals. If the above will be done, and if, in addition, arrangements can be made for the Governor to expire in time for the statue to be set up posthumously before 1968, I shall be glad to participate.Fondest regards.Cordially yours,RABBI NORMAN LAMM
