Exchange with Isi Leibler about International Colloquium on Jewish and Chinese Culture (1991)
Dear Rabbi Lamm, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincerest thanks, both personally and on behalf of the World Jewish Congress, for your participation in the first International Colloquium on Chinese and Jewish Culture in Beijing. We are all agreed that the Colloquium was an outstanding success, far exceeding all of our expectations. I don’t believe it is overstating the case to describe it as a landmark event of historic significance, which has the potential to substantially influence Chinese-Jewish relations in the years ahead. My concern now is that we keep up the momentum, and that we tap the immense reservoir of goodwill that was so much in evidence in Beijing this month. For our part, our first task will be to publish and disseminate the proceedings of the conference, in both Chinese and English. We are currently transcribing the papers presented in English, and these will be sent during the next few weeks to each author for proofing and, where necessary, amendment.Further ahead, the WJC is committed to building on what we have started in Beijing, and during the coming weeks and months we will examine ways to do this not only in China and elsewhere in Asia. I would greatly appreciate hearing any ideas you might have in this regard. We would like to believe that the Colloquium has provided you with contacts and interlocutors in China with whom you will be able to continue and expand the dialogue on your own initiative. This was one of the main goals of the Colloquium, and we would like to believe it has been met. Accordingly, we would greatly appreciate any feedback from you if there are any developments in this direction....2/5 Queens Rd Melbourne, Victoria 3004, Australia Phone: (03) 828 8520 Fax: (03) 828 8555 Telex: AA31838BUDAPEST BUENOS AIRES GENEVA JERUSALEM LONDON MELBOURNE NEW YORK PARIS ROME2.I have enclosed a photograph taken during the course of the Colloquium which you might like to keep, and we will be sending you the published v…
