Letter to Suzanne Landy about Reading Suggestions on Judaism (1973)

My Dear Suzanne: It was a genuine pleasure hearing from you and Mrs. Lamm and I were thrilled with your letter. We were especially delighted to hear about the wonderful results Paul experienced in London. He and his brother made an unusually fine impression upon us, and the good news about his health will be, I hope, a happy omen for the year to come and many years thereafter. Please do give Paul and Gery, and their parents, our warmest good wishes. I shall be writing to the Coopers separately. As to the substance of your letter. I can quite readily understand your predicament and sympathize with it. In a community as small as Melbourne, it is understandably difficult to find a full Jewish community whose commitments will be approximately those which you cherish. Under the circumstances, the most intelligent approach is to keep in contact with what is known as "The Modern Orthodox" Jewish community in the United States. That is just what you were doing when you required a reading list. My advice to you is to get as much as you can out of what Lubavitch has to teach in Melbourne and supplement the rest by reading. I suggest the following as a beginning. You may find some of the material in the bookstores in Melbourne, if you do not, let me know and I will see if we can arrange for one of the booksellers in New York to gather the material for you and mail it to you. However, here you must let me know how much you are willing to spend and if you want the books sent by surface mail or airmail. (Incidentally, you may want to speak to Arnold Roth, with whom I discussed a book problem several weeks ago in the US.) 1. The easiest of all is Herman Wouk's "This is My God", which I am told has just been reissued in paperback form. 2. Izidor Epstein's "Judaism", an extremely informative paperback on almost all aspects of Jewish history, literature, religious observance and philosophy. 3.
