Exchange with Emil Landau about Fundraising for Integration of Russian Immigrants in Israel (1972)
Dear Mr. Landau: It was a genuine pleasure seeing you in Long Beach several weeks ago. While I was sorry to hear that you were ill in Florida, it was a source of reassurance to me that you were able to be at the breakfast party and, in addition, to speak as charmingly and humorously as you did. I am taking advantage of the "opening" you hinted at in our parting conversation, and I trust that you will be pleased to be "exploited" in this manner. I would like to be able to do this kind of thing to you at least until you were 100 years old. The 20 years thereafter I will accept your guidance in doing it to your son.The matter concerns a very sensitive and terribly important issue – that of Russian Jewish immigrants to Israel. In order to avoid duplication, I am taking the privilege of sending you enclosed a copy of a recent talk I gave on the issue. I hope you will do me the honor of reading it carefully.Now, as to the practicality of the situation. There is one man, a young תלמיד חכם who is one of the most competent, sincere, and dedicated people I have ever met. He 16 devoting all his time and efforts to this cause without accepting any compensation. What is needed is the following: four paid coordinators in the four major parts of the country to supervise the many religious people who are willing to volunteer their time and efforts to greeting and helping Integrate the Russian Jews. We must pay them $4,000 a year each. In addition, we need some smaller amounts for supplies for them during the first weeks in the country, and somewhat larger amounts to organize Ulpanim for these immigrants.A number of my friends have been very kind in helping to sponsor part of the work that is necessary.I hope I shall be able to rely on your insight and generosity as well.
