Exchange with Ronald Misheiker about R. Lamm's South Africa Itinerary (1963)

Dear Mr. Misheiker: Thank you very much for your kind letter of September 16 which I just received. In accordance with your request, I cabled you today indicating that I could accept your invitation if you would revise your calendar to allow for my arriving in your city on Monday February 3 and leaving on Thursday February 20, P.O.I. I certainly hope that the difference of a little more than a week will not materially affect your plans for what I trust will be a most successful campaign. I have, of course, heard a great deal about Johannesburg Jewry, and have both written for and seen some of your outstanding periodicals. Mr. H. S. Liebgott, whom it was my pleasure to meet some weeks ago, added many important details, and your own letter was most enlightening. A few items remain to be clarified before final arrangements are agreed upon. One I mentioned to Mr. Liebgott, and that is – my itinerary. My previous experience in lecture tours in foreign lands has been that the tendency to prepare an overcrowded schedule is difficult to resist, but that in addition to taking its toll of one’s health, it is not always effective for the purpose of the visit. Second, there is the question of financial arrangements. In order to accept your invitation I must give up a number of important lectures in the States with pay fees. I am eager, therefore, to know from you as soon as possible what your intentions are with regard to compensation beyond the necessary expenses incurred. The work you are doing is of the greatest significance, and I will be honored to assist in any way I can in advancing your goals of “hinukh” and encouraging the study of Torah. I assume you and your associates will provide me with all the information I need in order to make the trip successful. If you will be kind enough to cable (or w…

Letter of Gratitude to Ernest Horwitz about His Assistance in South Africa (1964)

Dear Mr. Horwitz: Although I have sent you regards through others, I do want to take the time to write to you personally to tell you how very much I appreciated all your advice and assistance during my stay in Johannesburg. I shall value your friendship for a long time to come. Before leaving for New York, Mr. H. Gordon asked me to give regards to Dr. Harry Miller of Mt. Sinai Hospital. You added your regards to his wife, your niece. I am sorry that I have not been able to locate the Millers. Mt. Sinai has no such Doctor on their staff. I should be glad to give them the regards from you and Mr. Gordon, if you could notify me where to reach them. Please give my fondest regards to Mr. Gordon and to all my dear friends of the Board of Jewish Education and the rest of the Jewish community. My best wishes for a Happy and Kosher Passover. Sincerely, Rabbi Norman Lamm
