Letter from Dr. Weiss to R. Heifetz about Request for Religious Items for India (1962)
Dear Rabbi Heifetz: Rabbi Norman Lamm referred your letter of January 4th to me. Our friends in India are in need of Chumashim and of the complete Tanach, both in the original text with commentaries and editions with English translation. Two or three sets of Mishnah and Ein Yaakov would also be most helpful. Only such books ought to be selected which are in good condition and do not need re-binding. The books should be shipped to: U.O.J.C.I. c/o Magen Hasidim Synagogue 8 Morland Road Bombay 11, IndiaThey should be insured and a copy of the Bill of Lading must be sent to the recipients so that they may be claimed from customs. The package and the Bill of Lading must clearly state that it is a gift. The value of a package, for custom-free entrance, cannot be above \$50.Should you prefer our handling the shipment, kindly inform us to this effect and send the books to us at 84 Fifth Avenue, New York 11, N.Y.The need for other religious articles, such as Taleisim, Tefillin and Sifrei Torah is also very great. The poverty of the Bene Israel is indescribable. Any help you could extend to us in this direction will, therefore, be deeply appreciated. With many thanks and all good wishes, I amVery sincerely yours,Dr. Samson R.
