שלום רב, בשבועות האחרונים קראתי בענין רב על הסכסוך המתפתח מסביב לחוק השרות הלאומי. ובחוה״מ של סוכות באו אלי כמה אנשים מן המחנה החרדי כאן בניו יורק ותבעו ממני להצטרף אליהם במלחמתם נגד הצעת החוק לשרות לאומי לבנות אפילו בהתנדבות. מכיון שהאנשים היו די מכובדים, הקשבתי בדרך ארץ, והשבתי בנימוס שלא כך היא דרכה תורה, ואינני מסכים לעיקר שיטתם, ואף כי אני רואה את דבריהם במקרים היוצאים מן הכלל אינני רואה שום עולה בהצעת השר החדש, ואדרבה וכו'. אחרי הדברים האלה, נצגן בי רעיון שאולי נוכל למצוא מובל ולמנוע עוד "פרשה" של מאבם דתי, עם כל ה"הקריוות" וכדומה, שם שמים לא יתקדש על-ידיהם. ב"יטוחך, הנני להציע לפניך את הרעיון, שהוא די פשוט, מתוך תמימה ואי-מתממות בענינים. הנה עיקר הבעיה בענין הזה הוא שהחוק יקים מנגנון שלם אשר בעיניו יופעל לחץ סוציאלי על הבנות הדתיות להתחייב לשרות רוחם של הוריתם. אם כן הצעתי היא שהבנות הדתיות יתקבלו תחתם ביד אחד מן ההורים ובו מהן רשות לבת להתנגד. Dear Prof. Lamm: This letter will confirm to you financial arrangements during your term as President of the University, pursuant to your election to that post by the Board of Trustees of the University, effective for a period of five years.
