Letter from R. Astor about "The Jews and the Ecumenical Council" (1964)
Dear Rabbi Lamm: I am indebted to a thoughtful congregant for passing on to me a copy of the pamphlet with your excellent address on "The Jews and the Ecumenical Council," delivered on Saturday, December 21, 1963. May I offer you a hearty Yosher Koach for your fine and well-reasoned exposition of the subject, and for pointing out so clearly the stand which should be taken by every self-respecting Jew. Many of us here were incensed at the statement of Reform Rabbi Eisendrath and I am glad to note your criticism of his cringing reaction to the proposed "schema" of the Ecumenical Council. I believe that he has since been censured by some of his own Reform associates. As I have promised to return the pamphlet to its sender, I would be most grateful if you could spare me one or two copies. I hope that they are still available and that you will accede to my request. With greetings and all good wishes from an admiring colleague from "down under." Sincerely yours,
