Exchange with R. Goldwater about Book Project on Jewish Theology (1969)
Dear Rabbi Lamm, The Chief Rabbi has asked the Publications Committee of the United Synagogue to have a small book prepared dealing with Judaism and directed primarily to Jewish students. The Committee agrees that this would meet a very real and pressing need in our community. The length contemplated is something between 60,000 and 80,000 words. The book would have to deal with what is commonly referred to as the “theology” of Judaism, and to some extent also with the attitude of Judaism to international problems, and issues raised by human advances, as well as the practices. I am writing to enquire whether you would, in principle, be prepared to undertake such work for us, in which case we could discuss the terms on which it would be done. If you do not feel that you could undertake the work for us, I should be much obliged if you could suggest someone else who might be willing to do so; I hesitate to trouble you, but in that event it would greatly help us if you were able to sound out the individual concerned. Failing all else, is there any material published in America which we could use here? I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Raymond Goldwater, Chairman, Publications Committee
