Letter to Dr. Furmanovich about Fundraising for Publishing Scholarship of Deceased Rabbis (1974)

Dear Dr. Furmanovich, It’s a long time since we have talked, and I do hope it will not be too long before we can meet again under happy circumstances. Your wife recently called, while she was in New York, to consult about some educational matter. I might add that I was enormously impressed with her care and concern for the education of the children. It is a pity that I have not yet had the opportunity of meeting her personally. My dear friend, at this time I would like to turn to you for some assistance on a matter of great importance to me. Actually, the matter concerns two brothers, both of them great *geonim* who are no longer with us. One passed away in 1948 in New York, and the other was killed by the Nazis together with six children, so that no one is left of his family. I knew one of them—the one who lived in New York—and was very close to him.As I said, both were great scholars. I have been asked to participate in re-publishing the very rare works of the older brother, whom I knew, and whose books are a treasury of halakhic responsa.I have also come into possession of the manuscripts of Torah scholarship by the second brother, the one who was killed in Europe. He was a great scholar, and these manuscripts are the only things that remain of him and his family. As I said, I have a deep personal interest in undertaking the publication of these works. Because of certain reasons, I cannot turn to my usual friends in New York in the same way I do for all other projects.I therefore wonder if I may turn to you at this time to ask you to assist me in these very important projects. They should cost me upward of \$18,000. Of course, such a sum is far beyond my means, and that is why I must turn to friends and acquaintances to ask for their assistance.I do hope you can make a significant contribution to this cause that means so much to me. I suggest you make your check out to my charitable foundation, *The Jewish Center Charity Foundation, Inc.*With this, let me thank y…
