Letter to Van Kardish Soliciting Donation for Indian Jewry from Fort Tryon Jewish Center (1961)
Dear Mr. Kardish: Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of being introduced by you to an audience at the Ft. Tryon Jewish Center, whom I addressed on the theme of "The Jews of India." As you will recall, following the lecture, without any prompting by me, a number of men and women approached me and asked what they could do, both individually and collectively, for our fellow Jews in India. I mentioned that they might contribute $250.00, which would be enough to support a Hazzan-Teacher for the village of Pen where the poor Bone Israels, many of whm are rice farmers, desperately need a teacher and someone to conduct services for them. Your people accepted with alacrity and premised to undertake this project.I have since notified the people in Pen that they may expect assistance from you. I do hope that you and the good people of Ft. Tryon Jewish Center have not forgotten about this. I am sure Rabbi Goldberg will remember the details. Please let me hear from you at your earliest convenience.Sincerely yours,Rabbi Norman Lammcc: Mr. Wilson Aboudi250 Columbia Blvd
