Letter to Dr. and Estelle Fink about Shaarei Zedek Resuscitator Project and Physician Recommendation (1971)

Dear Estelle and Boy: You probably are aware of the disastrous situation to which I returned here at the Center, one which has not yet been rectified by engaging new personnel. I mention this only as my legitimate excuse for having allowed eight days to pass before writing to you. I cannot begin to tell you how pleased and flattered Mindy and I were by all the attention you gave us in the Kiddush you gave in our honor the last Shabbat in Jerusalem. We were genuinely moved and in addition enjoyed it enormously. I trust and hope that we will have the opportunity to reciprocate for happy events for many, many years to come. Thank God, we are all in the best of health — but we already feel insecure knowing that you are 6,000 miles away. But then again, we hope to spend more and more time in Jerusalem and that, at least in some measure, will make up for it. Two questions: First, could you send me a quick private note outlining the resuscitator project for Shaarei Zedek. I’d like the amount (both minimal and optimal) and a very rough guess as to how many people you can save per week ( obviously for sales purposes to laymen). Second, with reference to your recommendation of a physician: people here, of course, second your fine words about his competence, but they have reservations about his willingness to make house calls in emergency and his general availability, etc... Could you (of course, this would be absolutely and totally confidential) let me know what you think about [redacted]? I want to thank you again, Boy, for the reassurance you gave my sister. It makes me feel much more at ease here to know that, if necessary, she will be able to call upon you. And Estelle, Mindy and I thank you once again from the bottom of our hearts. Our warmest regards to your daughters, to Danny, and to your parents. Cordially, Rabbi Norman Lamm
