Letter to OU Lay Leader Dudley Feit about Suggestions for His Trip to India (1961)

My dear Mr. Feit: Thank you very much for your phone call concerning your projected trip to India. For your information, the Sabbath is over in Bangkok on July 22nd at 7:21 P.M. I am writing to Mr. Abraham D. Jhirad, the Executive Director of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations in India in Bombay about your forthcoming visit and asking him to extend all courtesy to you. I would suggest that you write to him directly, informing him of the time you will be in Bombay and the hotel where you will be staying. He will then be able to meet with you and perhaps bring along some of the Indian Jewish leaders. His address is Magen Hasidim Synagogue, 8 Morland Road, Bombay.I would suggest that primarily you ought to just show them brotherliness and the great interest that Orthodox Jews in America have in their brethren in India. Stress, above all, education and try to find what has been done in this area since my last visit. Encourage them greatly – they need it. Try to steer completely clear of any discussion on the Halakhic view on intermarriage that is currently creating a crisis in the community. You might ask them to show you their various synagogues and perhaps attend a service with them. It would be good if you can leave them (i.e., the U.O.J.C.I.) a small contribution as an expression of your interest.I am also mailing you a copy of my report on India and I hope that you will treat it as confidential information.Let me wish you and Mrs. Feit a very pleasant and enjoyable trip. I hope that you will report back to me after you return.Sincerely yours,Rabbi Norman Lamm
