Letter from Dr. Elman about Republishing R. Lamm's Scholarship (1987)
Dear Dr. Lamm: Sifting through your articles, papers, and addresses was both a pleasure and a challenge – the challenge being to distinguish between my own enjoyment in reading work that salts fresh thought into seemingly pedestrian topics, and the task of constructing a book that would be both salable and of broad interest. I excluded addresses that fit their immediate context so closely that they might date too quickly or prove irrelevant to readers. Enclosed is the result of this winnowing, arranged to cohere around its natural center of gravity rather than a Procrustean scheme of my own, though some worthy pieces had to be omitted. I regret leaving out the Rambam paper, but I believe it belongs in a future Hebrew collection, and I also regret omitting “Notes of an Unrepentant Preacher,” which I enjoyed but could not fit. The title chosen associates this volume with Faith and Doubt – it captures the underlying themes of your work, where you focus on problems but always point toward solutions and hope. The subtitle refers to the years after Mattan Torah (2448 A.M.), though it may be too esoteric. The arrangement reflects salability: for example, placing the study on judicial constraint under Halakhah rather than Jewish Thought, and including a Holocaust section because so many readers view Jewish history through that lens. I am sorry to have missed you last week, but I enjoyed a fine conversation with Dr. Landman. Sincerely, Yaakov Elman. P.S. Since next year is the 33rd centenary of Mattan Torah, perhaps a faculty member could organize a series of articles on that theme.Proposed book: Faith and Hope: Judaism’s Thirty-Fourth Century by Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm.I.
