Exchange with Dr. Naomi Cohen about Targum Yonatan and Tzelem Elokim (1992)
Dear Dr. Naomi: Thank you for your reprint, "Taryag and the Noahide Commandments." I read it carefully, and found it very enlightening. The reconstruction of the origin of the tradition is both novel and compelling. To prove that I really read the article carefully, may I make one comment on Note 15. It is possible that the TY is less shockingly anthropomorphic than it appears on the surface, if you assume the author reads the verse *be'tzelem, Elokim bara oto* rather than the usual way which omits the comma. There is an entire tradition of this sort, and apparently R. Akiva punctuated the verse the same way. In that case, the listing of the numbers of the organs refers to the uniqueness of the human *tzellem* rather than to the Deity. My very best wishes to your distinguished husband who, I hope, will have good news to report in the very near future.NORMAN LAMMPresidentNL/nv500 West 185th Street,New York, N.Y. 10033(212) 960-5
