Letter from Myron Chaitovsky about Mikey Butler's Receipt of Bachelor's Degree (2001)

Dear Rabbi Dr. Lamm, amv"sh: I have just heard about the marvelous mentchlichkeit exhibited by YU – and, no surprise, by yourself personally – in awarding Mikey Butler his bachelor’s degree. With all the complaints you have had to hear, read, and shoulder over the past quarter century, I thought that a yiyasher kochacha was not out of order. What you may not know is that, as an Admissions rep (actually before I started officially working at Yeshiva), I interviewed Mikey’s mom, Nina, prior to her enrollment at Stern College. Mikey’s father was also briefly my classmate at Yeshiva before he left while I stayed, and later we were colleagues for several years at many NCSY and other kiruv shabbatonim. Danny is personally responsible for the enrollment of dozens of students at YC, SCW, and other Torah institutions. Both of us were in law school during that period; in Danny’s case, he nevertheless graduated near the top of his class and later became a judge, while I spent my post–law school years in college and law school administration. While Mikey knows me primarily by voice – from my earlier gilgul as a singer with Ruach and Neshomo – we have met a few times over the years, most recently at the last YU Seforim Sale. Again, I thank you personally for the tremendous lesson in bein adam le-chaveiro you have imparted to us all. I cannot imagine a more selfless act before you step down as President of Yeshiva. Kol tuv, chag urim same’ach, Myron B. Chaitovsky, Director of Admissions, Brooklyn Law School.
